Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Late strikes give Bears crucial sweep of Chatham, 3-2

PITTSBURGH, PA.—The SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (10-6-1, 6-3-1 ECAC West) scored two third period goals to defeat Chatham University (5-11-1, 0-9-1) 3-2 on Saturday afternoon. The win gave the Bears an important conference sweep and moved them back into fourth place. Potsdam is now 5-1-1 in its last seven games.

Junior forward Jaci Morr (Monroe, Mich./Team Detroit) led the Bears with a goal and an assist and freshman goaltender Alexa Pfeiffer (Sylvania, Ohio/Little Caesar's) made 31 saves to earn her sixth career win. Senior forward Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Rochester Edge) and junior assistant captain Anna-Rose Bertin (Marathon, Ontario/Canadian International Hockey Academy) also scored for the Bears.

Potsdam outshot the Cougars 15-12 in the opening period, but strong goaltending by Pfeiffer and Chatham's Sydney Isbell kept the contest scoreless until the final two minutes. At the 18:35 mark, Morr scored her second of the weekend with an assist from freshman defenseman Delphine Léonard (Montreal, Quebec/Dawson College Prep). The lead lasted just 12 seconds as Chatham answered at 18:47 with a goal from Cassidy Calhoun. The score was 1-1 after 20 minutes.

The Cougars fired 11 shots on Pfeiffer in the second period, aided by two power plays. However, the goaltender kept the contest tied. The Bears were unable to take advantage of their one power play and the score was unchanged heading into the second intermission.

After defense controlled most of the first half of the third period, the Bears regained the lead. Calhoun was whistled for interference at 8:19. Just 14 seconds later, Ott scored her 11th goal of the season, fifth on the power play. Morr assisted on the goal. With 2:25 left, Chatham tied the game on a power-play marker from Erika Martin. Barely a minute later, Bertin put the Bears up for good with an assist from junior forward Brenna Wilson (Kanata, Ontario/Ottawa Senators). Isbell was pulled for an extra attacker with 1:09 to play, but Pfeiffer and her defense sealed the win.

The Cougars outshot Potsdam 33-27. The Bears were 1-for-4 on the power play and Chatham went 1-for-5.

Potsdam is back in action on Friday, when the Bears travel to Oswego State to begin a home-and-home series with the Lakers at 3 p.m.
