POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Fredonia (9-7-2, 5-5-1 SUNYAC) scored two first period goals and held off the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (6-11-2, 1-8-1) 3-1 on Friday night. Senior assistant captain
Vinny Caligiuri (Shoreham, N.Y./Hartford Wolfpack) scored for the Bears.
Blue Devils senior forward Marcus Ortiz (Richardson, Texas/Wilkes-Barre Scranton Knights) opened the scoring at 5:48 of the first period with a power-play marker. Just 4:29 later, freshman forward Jacob Haynes (Whitby, Ontario/Fresno Monsters) scored the eventual game-winner. Fredonia took the 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
The contest, which had five penalties in the opening 20 minutes added six more in the second. Potsdam was unable to score in three power-play opportunities and the Blue Devils had no luck in two. However, Fredonia capitalized with an even strength goal at 3:55 from sophomore forward Bobby Polacheck (Kingston, Pa./Trenton Golden Hawks) and led 3-0 after two periods.
The Bears dominated the third period, thanks in part to three more power plays, outshooting the Blue Devils 19-7. Caligiuri finally got Potsdam on the board at 4:43 with an assist from sophomore forward
Mike Sweeney (Pittsburgh, Pa./PAL Islanders). Fredonia sophomore goalie Eric Bogart (London, Ontario/New England Wolves) was unbeatable the rest of the way. The Bears pulled junior goalie
Brendan McMenimen (Merrimac, Mass./Islanders Hockey Club) with 1:12 remaining, but couldn't get any closer.
Bogart stopped 36 shots for the win and McMenimen finished with 28. The Blue Devils were 1-for-6 on the power play and Potsdam was 0-for-7.
