Fredonia stays hot with win over Potsdam

POTSDAM, N.Y.- Strong scoring from SUNY Fredonia (11-1, 6-0 SUNYAC) takes down the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (1-9, 0-6 SUNYAC) 73-47 Saturday afternoon at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium. Senior guard Abbey LaPage (North Bangor, N.Y./Franklin Academy) had a game-high 17 points, while junior forward Emily Drake (Athens, N.Y./Coxsackie-Athens) grabbed 11 rebounds for another game-high. Sophomore forward Jenna Einink (Mayville, N.Y./Chautauqua Lake) and senior guard Khee Nance (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk) each scored 15 points for the Blue Devils.
 
Fredonia scoring started early with 15 in the first quarter. Einink put up six points, while senior captain Patti Dorgler (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop-Molloy) had four of the Bears' five points.
 
The teams went basket-for-basket during the opening minutes of the second. At 6:31, the Blue Devils ignited for an 18-0 run to get out to their largest lead of the half. Freshman guard Drew Dufrane (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool), senior captain Meghan Driscoll (Troy, N.Y./Troy) and Drake each contributed two points for Potsdam.
 
Fredonia continued their strong offensive push into the third with another 11-2- run over the first four minutes of play. The Bears bounced back, but the Blue Devils continued to match them each basket. Fredonia held the slight 21-15 advantage during the quarter. Nance scored eight points for the Blue Devils and LaPage chipped in five for Potsdam.
 
Potsdam started an 16-6 run that lasted over the first five minutes with LaPage going 3-for-3 from behind the arch in the fourth. The Bears outscored Fredonia 21-13 during the final quarter, but the Blue Devils took the 73-47 win.
 
LaPage shot .500 from behind the 3-point line and Dorgler added 10 points. Freshman guard Leah Giavatto (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) finished with a career-high six points, five assists and three rebounds for Potsdam.
 
Senior guard Alexis Cheatham (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) tacked on eight points for Fredonia and four different Blue Devils scored six points. Einink had a team-high eight rebounds.
 
The next games, Potsdam will host SUNY Cortland Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Oswego State Saturday at 4 p.m.
