POTSDAM, N.Y.- In a double overtime thriller, SUNY Oneonta (8-9-1, 6-4 SUNYAC) completed a comeback to take out the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (12-6-2, 5-4-1 SUNYAC) 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Maxcy Turf. Freshman forward
Lexi Dean (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) scored the lone goal for the Bears. Freshman forward Micaela Honsinger (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford) scored in the first half and junior midfielder Jess Downin (Franklin, N.Y./Franklin Central) got the game-winner for the Red Dragons.
Â
It was a playoff game atmosphere as soon as the referee blew his whistle at the start of the contest. The teams were aggressive on both sides of the ball and each playing with something to prove. Oneonta got the first two shots off of the game, but Potsdam made the most of their first. At the 20:16 minute mark, junior forward
Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) dribbled down the right side of the box and sent a pass in front the Red Dragon goal. Dean picked it up in the box and fired a shot over goalie Melissa Muller's (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) head to find the top right corner of the goal for the 1-0 lead.
Â
Oneonta tied the game at 32:25 after a corner kick. Sophomore midfielder Abby Ousouljoglou (Bridgewater, N.Y./Bridgewater Raritan Regional) lined up for the corner kick and found freshman defender Jennifer Kinsley (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) at the top of the box. Kinsley rang the crossbar and the ball bounced down to the right of sophomore goalie
Delphine Léonard (Montreal, Quebec/Dawson College Prep). Before Léonard could react, Honsinger kicked the ball into the net. The Bears got two more opportunities before the close of the half, but were unsuccessful and the game was tied 1-1 going into the break.
Â
Both teams had multiple opportunities in the second half, but Muller and Léonard stayed tough to total seven saves together to keep their teams in the game. The Red Dragons held the slight advantage with eight shots to the Bears six during the 45 minutes. Regulation ended and the teams went into the first overtime.
Â
Oneonta made the most of the 10 minute period with four shots, but Potsdam's defense held them off and the teams were headed into the second overtime.
Â
With 1:40 remaining, the Red Dragons were awarded a free kick about 10 yards outside of the box. Senior defender Emily Opalinski (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) lined up for the kick and fired a shot. Léonard jumped up to make the stop, but the ball deflected off her hands and fell to the ground, where Downin headed it home for the game-winner at the 108:19 mark.
Â
Oneonta led the Bears 19-12 in shots and corner kicks, 10-4.
Â
Muller finished with five saves in the win, while Léonard stopped seven.
Â
The contest marks the end of the careers for
