Bears edged by Red Dragons on the road, 1-0

ONEONTA, N.Y.- SUNY Oneonta (9-1-1, 5-1 SUNYAC) held on for the 1-0 victory over the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (5-7, 1-4 SUNYAC) Saturday afternoon at Red Dragon Field. Sophomore goalie Jakeb Mitchell (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) finished with seven saves on the day.

Play was even throughout the first 45 minutes of play, with Oneonta having seven shots to Potsdam's five. Mitchell was tested in the first, but made three saves, while Red Dragon goalie Nicholas Giordano had two. The contest was scoreless at the end of the first half.

Oneonta upped their pressure following the break, with a shot from Cory Santangelo that was blocked by the Bears. The Red Dragons kept their foot on the pedal and were awarded a corner kick at 47:19. Witman Hernandez headed it toward the net, but Mitchell came up with the save. After another corner kick at 49:03, Justin Cebollero had a shot that went high and Potsdam kept Oneonta off the board for a strong showing from the defense.

The Red Dragons kept the Bears in their own zone for most of the next 15 minutes, before finding the back of the net at 65:29. After the ball was kicked out of bounds, a throw in from Carlos Martinez made it into the box. Roberto Ventura fired off a shot that hit the bottom of the cross bar then hit down and bounced across the goal line for the eventual game-winner. Oneonta keep the pressure through the remaining minutes of the game and the Bears' defense held tough. Potsdam's offense couldn't find a rhythm and the Red Dragons took the 1-0 win.

Giordano finished with three saves for the victory.

Oneonta held the 19-7 advantage in shots and in corner kicks 5-3.

Potsdam will be back on the pitch next weekend, when the Bears head to SUNY Fredonia Friday and Buffalo State Saturday.
