Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Pioneers down Bears, 3-1

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Utica College (14-8-1, 9-6-1 ECAC West) scored twice early in the second period and defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (12-10-1, 8-7-1) 3-1 on Tuesday night. Senior forward Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Rochester Edge) scored her 61st career goal for the Bears.

The Pioneers outshot Potsdam 11-5 in the opening period. Despite the shot advantage, Utica was only able to create a few prime scoring opportunities. Bears freshman goaltender Alexa Pfeiffer (Sylvania, Ohio/Little Caesar's) made three saves on the period's lone power play. Utica's best chance of the period came with about 36 seconds remaining, but Utica junior forward Carlie Smith (Grimsby, Ontario/St. Catherine's Chaos) couldn't finish off a two-on-one break and Pfeiffer made a pad save.

Junior forward Meghan Power (Windsor, Ontario/Neumann University) got Utica on the board just 43 seconds into the second period. She backhanded the puck blindly toward the net as she fell and it found its way through. At 2:56, sophomore forward Taylor Dion (Colchester, Vt./Boston Shamrocks) fed classmate Kaitlin Parent (Myersville, Md./Middletown) in the slot for a 2-0 advantage. The teams traded penalties over the rest of the period. At 15:50, senior captain Kaylen Van Wagner (Red Hook, N.Y./Hotchkiss) fired a shot from the right point and Ott slammed home the rebound.

Pfeiffer made 13 saves in the third period as Potsdam looked for the equalizer. Pioneers senior goalie Keira Goin (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./Hotchkiss) was able to stop all eight shots she faced in period. With 1:02 remaining, senior forward Gabrielle Schnepp (Northville, Mich./Belle Tire) roofed her own rebound to close the scoring at 3-1. Pfeiffer was pulled for an extra attacker with 47 seconds left, but Potsdam couldn't close the gap.

Pfeiffer stopped 32 shots and Goin made 20 saves. Potsdam was 0-for-4 on the power play and held Utica to no goals in six opportunities.

The Bears wrap up the regular season this weekend as they travel to fourth ranked Elmira College. Faceoff is schedule for 3 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.
