Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

No. 2 Lakers foil Bears comeback with OT goal, 5-4

OSWEGO, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (6-13-2, 1-10-1 SUNYAC) scored three goals in the third period, but Oswego State (16-3-1, 11-1-1) foiled the effort with a 5-4 overtime victory. Freshman forward Bryce Ferrell (Buffalo, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) scored twice and junior defenseman Sean Kacerosky (Kendall Park, N.J./New York Bobcats) and senior defenseman Jake Butler (Atlanta, Ga./Smith Falls Bears) also lit the lamp for the Bears.

Jody Sullivan wristed a partially deflected shot past Potsdam sophomore goalie Nate Skidmore (Syracuse, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) just 36 seconds into the contest to put the Lakers up 1-0. At the 3:05 mark, Joey Scorpio knocked down a clearing attempt and found the back of the net through traffic to double the lead. On the verge of being overpowered, the Bears battled back into the game. The defense clamped down and allowed just six more shots over the rest of the period. At the 8:02 mark, Ferrell broke up an Oswego clearing attempt that resulted in a great chance from senior assistant captain Alex Goodhue (Traverse City, Mich./Atlanta Jr. Knights). Matt Zawadzki made the save but was injured on the play and Ferrell ripped the rebound into the upper left corner of the net. David Jacobson replaced Zawadzki in goal for the remainder of the game.

Sparked by two power plays in the second period, Oswego outshot the Bears 12-6, but didn't have much to show for it. Potsdam killed off both penalties and Skidmore made 11 saves. At the 5:24 mark, Andrew Barton scored on a shot from the slot to increase the lead to 3-1. The Lakers took the two-goal advantage into the second intermission.

Three minutes into the third period, Skidmore stuffed Oswego's Kristoffer Brun on a breakaway. However, just over a minute later Potsdam was called for hooking and Shawn Hulshof scored on a shot from the left side of the net at the 5:00 mark. The Bears responded with their second biggest comeback of the season. The flurry started at 9:31. Potsdam fired four shots on Jacobson and scored on the fifth. Kacerosky converted from the slot to cut the gap to 4-2 with helpers from Butler and senior forward Tommy Telesca (Selden, N.Y./New York Bobcats). At 10:48, Joey Rutkowski received a game-misconduct and a major for contact-to-head against freshman forward Anthony Merante (NIagara Falls, N.Y./Thorold Blackhawks). The hit further energized the Bears and they completed the rally. At 12:30, Ferrell stood still behind the goal and waited for Butler to charge in. When he did, Ferrell fed him perfectly and Butler beat Jacobson. Just 2:36, later senior captain Nick Casacci (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./Connecticut Oilers) and Butler set up Ferrell with the equalizer. Oswego went on its final man advantage with 2:34 to go in regulation, but Skidmore and his defenders held their ground. Junior forward Dylan Vander Esch (San Jose, Calif./Hartford Wolfpack) broke free on a breakaway during the penalty kill, but Jacobson made his biggest save of the game to keep the score tied.

Mitchell Herlihey ended Potsdam's two-game winning streak in Oswego just 1:39 into the extra session. He swooped in from the left side, cut in front of Skidmore and backhanded the puck over the goaltender's left shoulder.

Skidmore finished with 25 saves and Jacobson earned the win in relief with 22 saves in 51:58. Zawadzki made four saves in the first 8:02.

Potsdam was 2-for-6 on the power play and the Lakers were 1-for-4.

The Bears head to Cortland tomorrow night for a 7 p.m. contest.
