CLERMONT, FLA.—The SUNY Potsdam softball team (3-1) surged to a sweep of the University of Maine-Farmington (1-5) on Monday morning. In game one, the Bears rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh, including a walk off single from sophomore center fielder
Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport), for a 6-5 victory. Potsdam pounded out a program record 21 hits to down the Beavers 15-1 in game two.
Senior shortstop
Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) was 7-for-10 with two RBI and two runs on the day. Freshman pitcher
Megan Fish (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) was 4-for-7 and picked up her second career win. Freshman first baseman
Emma McCarthy (Stone Ridge, N.Y./Roundout Valley) was also 4-for-7 with her first career home run, two RBI and three runs scored in the two games.
In the opener, Ott led off the bottom of the first with a double to right and was eventually driven in on a Fish single to make it 1-0. Maine-Farmington rallied for two runs in the top of the fourth on an RBI single from right fielder Alison Hamil and a fielder's choice. The Bears countered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Ott started things off with single and Fish knocked her in with another to tie the score. Senior catcher
Lauren Brace (Moriah, N.Y./Moriah) bunted in freshman left fielder
Lucy Condon (Kitchener, Ontario/St. David Catholic) to put Potsdam back in front.
The Beavers took advantage of three Bears' errors and three hits in the top of the seventh to grab a 5-3 lead. A two-run single from shortstop Margaret Fog made it 4-3 and an RBI single from second baseman Amber Grady put Potsdam on the brink.
With two outs and no one on in the bottom of the seventh, Brace reached on a throwing error to keep the Bears alive. Freshman first baseman
Day Stevens (Ravena, N.Y./Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) followed with a base hit. A dropped fly ball in right field allowed Brace and freshman pinch runner
Cassie Cole (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) to score and tie the game. With bases loaded, Falsion laced a single up the middle to end the contest.
Junior
Meghan Dougherty (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) went the first 3.1 innings for Potsdam, allowing two earned runs on five hits and two walks. She received a no decision. Fish earned the victory in relief, allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits and two walks. She struck out three Beavers. Skyler Watso went the distance for Maine-Farmington. Only three of the six runs were earned. She allowed 10 hits and three walks, while striking out five.
Two big innings and sophomore pitcher
Alissa McCauley's (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) arm were the story of the finale. The Bears scored five runs in the third inning, eight in the seventh and McCauley didn't allow hit until the fourth.
Five hits and six Beaver errors in the third inning gave the Bears a 5-0 lead. Junior third baseman
Chelsea Streeter (Massena, N.Y./Massena) started the carnage with a solo homer to left center. Three batters later, senior catcher
Angela Yodis (Duanesburg, N.Y./Schalmont) drove in McCarthy with a single to right. Falsion followed with a single to left to score freshman second baseman
Sarah Hyland (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville). An error by Maine-Farmington's shortstop Fog allowed Yodis and Falsion to cross the plate.
McCarthy homered in the top of the fourth and another Fog error in the fifth allowed Potsdam to grab a 7-0 lead.
After the Beavers finally got one back in the bottom of the sixth, the Bears put the game away with eight more in the top of the seventh. Stevens made it 8-1 with a sacrifice fly that scored Falsion. Next, freshman right fielder
Lacey Saucier (Williamstown, N.Y./APW) recorded her first collegiate RBI with a single to left that scored Ott. After two more singles from senior designated player
Kolbi Lyon (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) and Streeter, McCarthy made it 10-1 with a single to score Saucier. Hyland followed with another RBI single. Another dropped fly ball made it 13-1 and Ott closed the scoring with her program record 13th career triple to plate Falsion and Hyland.
McCauley (1-1) was rarely tested as she cruised to her fourth career victory. She allowed the one run on five hits and two walks, while striking out five. Anastasia Al (0-3) allowed five runs, three earned, on 11 hits and a walk in 2.2 innings. Kailyn Hill was roughed up for 10 runs, five earned, on 10 hits. She struck out three.
Ott was 4-for-6 with two RBI and a run scored. Fish was 2-for-3 and McCarthy was 4-for-5 with two RBI and three runs. Falsion was 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored.
Tomorrow, the Bears get another shot at No. 24 MIT at 11:30 a.m. They close the day with a 2 p.m. contest against Wellesley College.
