POTSDAM, N.Y.— St. Lawrence University (15-7) took two against the SUNY Potsdam softball team (3-18) on Tuesday afternoon. They won game one 8-6 in eight innings and game two 7-1. Senior catcher
Lauren Brace (Moriah, N.Y./Moriah Central) went 3-for-7 with her third home run of the season and four RBI. Freshman pitcher
Megan Fish (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) went 3-for-6 on the day and senior shortstop
Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) went 2-for-3 in game one.
Saints' junior catcher Emma Reakes (Bewerton, N.Y./Pual V. Moore) started the top of the second by working a walk. Reakes advanced to second on a wild pitch and then third after a groundout with one out. Sophomore first baseman Mylea Mann (Thousand Oaks, Calif./La Reina HS) got Reakes across with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Two innings later, Reakes got on with a one out double to right. Two batters later Mann singled to left, scoring Reakes again. Before the inning ended, freshman right fielder Meghan Hyatt (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) brought in Mann with a single. St. Lawrence ended the top of the fourth up 3-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Bears got on board with Brace's two-run home run, cutting the deficit to one. A couple batters later, junior third baseman
Chelsea Streeter (Massena, N.Y./Massena) doubled to left field. Next, freshman second baseman
Sarah Hyland (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) singled up the middle, to score Streete. Potsdam ended the inning with freshman catcher
Lacey Saucier (Williamstown, N.Y./APW) hitting one down the left field line to score Hyland and put the Bears up 4-3.
Before the top of the fifth started, junior
Meghan Dougherty (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) relieved Fish on the mound. After Saints' freshman left fielder Caitlin Syphurs (Sierra Vista, Ariz./Buena) reached on error and Reakes singled, freshman third baseman Angelina Carney (St. Petersburg, Fla./Lakewood) shot one to left to tie the game. St. Lawrence took the lead back when Reakes crossed the plate on a wild pitch. The Saints increased their lead to 6-4 after a dropped third strike and freshman pinch-runner Meryl Adams (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) scored.
The bottom of the fifth started with back-to-back singles from sophomore centerfielder
Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) and Ott. Brace singled to left scoring the duo and tying the game at six.
The game headed into extra innings with the score unchanged. With one out and a placed-runner on, Syphurs doubled to left, putting SLU up 7-6. Carney added another with a single to left that scored Syphurs. The Bears could not get anything started in the eighth, falling 8-6.
Fish pitched four innings, giving up six hits and three earned runs. Dougherty (0-7) pitched four innings, striking out six, allowing nine hits and two earned runs. Saints' senior Hannah Sears (2-1) (Copake, N.Y./Taconic Hills) pitched 4.1 innings in relief giving up five hits, and two earned runs. Freshman Madison Mitchell (Lincoln, Calif./Whitney) pitched 3.2 innings and allowed five hits and four earned runs.
SLU opened the scoring in the second inning of game two on an error. Later in the inning, Hyatt bunted in the another run to make it 2-0.
With the bases loaded in the top of the third, the ball was put in play and Potsdam could not field it cleanly, allowing two runners to score. Next, sophomore first baseman Abrianna Schlickenmayer (Yucca Valley, Calif./Yucca Valley) hit a two-run double to put the Saints up 6-0 after three.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Bears scored their lone run on a ground that plated Saucier. The Saints tacked on another run in the top of the seventh for the 7-1 final.
Bears' sophomore
Alissa McCauley (1-7) (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) pitched four innings, allowing five hits and one earned run. Dougherty pitched three innings, giving up four hits and one unearned run. SLU sophomore Allie Courtwright (4-4) (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional HS) pitched a complete game, striking out five and allowing one earned run.
The Bears host SUNY Canton for two on Thursday at 3 p.m.
