No. 6 Cortland handles Bears

CORTLAND, N.Y.—Sixth-ranked SUNY Cortland (12-1, 4-0 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (4-8, 1-4) 24-9 on Saturday afternoon. Senior captain Casey Boulio (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage) led the Bears with three goals and senior attackman Berkley Stone (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) scored twice.
 
The Red Dragons built a 4-0 lead over the first 10:35 of the contest before Potsdam answered with three in a row. Senior attackman Michael Roukous (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) set up Boulio's first at 4:02. Boulio scored his second with a second remaining in the first. Stone struck just 1:12 into the second quarter to close the gap to 4-3.
 
Cortland netted the next four, including two in a row on the man advantage, before junior attackman Eric Soderquist (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) fed freshman attackman Nick Henrie (Massena, N.Y./Massena) at 5:13 to make it 8-4. Cortland closed the have with five straight and took a 13-4 lead into the break.
 
The Red Dragons opened the second half with a 5-1 run for an 18-5 lead at 8:55 of the third quarter. Stone score his second at 11:02. Potsdam put together another 3-0 run in the last 5:41 of the third to make it an 18-8 contest. Senior captain Matt Moran (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) scored at 5:41. Junior midfielder Nick Orsini (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) fed Boulio to complete the hat trick at 2:06 and then scored his own goal with two seconds left in the third.
 
Soderquist scored a man-up goal at 5:01 of the fourth quarter before Cortland closed out the 24-9 win.
 
Bears senior goalie Jack Bezek (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) made 14 saves in the first 30 minutes. Sophomore Sean Coe (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) stopped six shots in the last 22:05. Red Dragon goalie Joe Scalise earned the win with five saves in the first half.
 
Potsdam heads to Plattsburgh on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. showdown with the Cardinals.
