POTSDAM, N.Y.— Clarkson University (18-14) took both games of a doubleheader from the SUNY Potsdam softball team (8-21) on Wednesday afternoon. The Golden Knights won game one 5-4 in eight innings and game two 13-2 in five. Senior shortstop
Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) went 3-for-5 with four RBI. Sophomore center fielder
Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) went 2-for-6, scoring twice and freshman pitcher
Megan Fish (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) went 2-for-3 in game one.
The Bears got the opener started with a double from Falsion. Two batters later Ott hit a two-run home run, putting the Bears up first. Potsdam loaded the bases, but couldn't capitalize. In the bottom of the first, Clarkson answered with one run on an RBI single from catcher Michele Winn.
The game was quiet until the bottom fourth when Golden Knight left fielder Samm Swiesz tied the game with a sacrifice fly.
In the top of the seventh, freshman pinch-hitter
Day Stevens (Ravena, N.Y./Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) hit the go ahead home run to left center. Clarkson rallied to tie the score in the bottom of the inning. Swiesz led off with a walk and pitcher Maggie Stark reached on an error. After a passed ball, Clarkson second baseman Kyrstin Messier brought in Swiesz on a ground out to send the game into extras.
With Ott starting on second base in the top of the eighth, Fish sacrifice bunted her to third. Senior catcher
Lauren Brace (Moriah, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) followed with a single to left field and moved to second off an error, while Ott scored the Bears fourth run. Clarkson started the bottom of the eighth the same as the Bears with center fielder Summer Lancette sacrifice bunting shortstop from Raeanna Dunn to third. With two outs, Winn reached on error and eventually scored herself and Dunn giving Clarkson a 5-4 victory.
Sophomore
Alissa McCauley (1-8) (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) was tagged with the loss after pitching 1.2 innings. She allowed two unearned runs despite not giving up a hit. Fish, the contest's starter, pitched six innings, giving up two earned runs off six hits. Stark (3-1) pitched 1.1 innings, allowing one hit and one unearned run. Starting pitcher Leah Allen pitched 6.2 innings, struck out four and gave up three earned runs.
In game two, Clarkson got runners on base early. The Golden Knights got six of of their first seven batters on and score four. Junior pitcher
Meghan Dougherty's (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) (3-8) day ended after allowing six runs on four hits in a third of an inning. In relief, McCauley couldn't slow Clarkson down and the Golden Knights led 8-0 after one.
Clarkson tacked on five more runs for a commanding 13-0 lead after two innings.
Falsion sparked the Bears' offense with a two-out double in the top third. Fish then walked and the two runners advanced to second and third on a passed ball. Ott brought in both runners with a single to left field.
McCauley allowed six earned runs on seven hits in 0.2 innings pitched. Fish pitched three innings, totaling a strikeout and allowing two hits. Clarkson's Katie Pelton (2-4) pitched two innings, striking out one and giving up one hit. Bridge pitched three innings, striking out seven, while allowing one earned run off three hits.
Potsdam looks to get back on track when the Bears host Fredonia at 3 p.m. on Friday.
