Golden Eagles down Bears in doubleheader

GENESEO, N.Y.— The College at Brockport (10-8, 2-2 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam softball team (3-10, 0-6) 9-1 and 10-2 on Sunday afternoon in a SUNYAC doubleheader at Geneseo. Junior third baseman Chelsea Streeter (Massena, N.Y./Massena) went 2-for-5 with a double and RBI on the day, while sophomore centerfielder Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) went 3-for-5.
 
In game one, Brockport got on the board first with a single up the middle from Karleigh Eaton. A few batters later Alexis Ross doubled to left field bringing in two. The Golden Eagles ended the second inning up 3-0.
 
Freshman second baseman Sarah Hyland (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) started the third with a double to left center. Hyland then scored on an infield single from Falsion. In the bottom of the third, Brockport got the run back on a sac fly from Jessica Koneski.
 
The following inning, the Golden Eagles loaded the bases. A run scored on a throwing error before Lindsay Wachna drove in another with a hit to left field. After pitching three innings junior Meghan Dougherty's (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) day came to an end, as she was relieved by sophomore Alissa McCauley (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy). McCauley ended the inning after two more runs crossed the plate, making the score 9-1 after four.
 
The Bears were able to get a runner in scoring position in the fifth but could not convert, as game one concluded with Brockport winning 9-1.
 
Dougherty (0-5) gave up 11 hits and eight earned runs in 3.0 innings. McCauley pitched 1.0 inning allowing three hits and no earned runs. Brockport's Wachna (1-3) pitched all five innings, allowing four hits and one run.
 
 
In game two, the Bears wasted no time to score. Freshman outfielder Lucy Condon (Kitchener, Ontario/St. David Catholic) worked a walk in her first plate appearance. Condon moved to third after a couple wild pitches. Freshman pitcher Megan Fish (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) then brought in Condon with a ground out, giving the Bears a 1-0 lead. The next inning, Streeter started Potsdam off with a double to left center. She scored on a fielding error during Hyland's at bat.
 
In the bottom third, the Golden Eagles started off with three straight singles. Meghan Cullen then doubled to center scoring all three runners, giving them a 3-2 lead. Wachna followed with a double of her own, scoring Cullen. Wachna then was driven in by a Casey Danko single. Brockport ended its run with a Koneski double. After three innings, Brockport led 6-2.
 
The bottom fifth began with three straight Eagles reaching. Shelby Perry extended the lead with a single up the middle. Following the single, the Bears took out Fish and brought in McCauley. Before McCauley retired the side, Brockport scored two more, giving them a 9-2 edge going into the sixth.
 
In the sixth the Bears got Falsion on, but stranded her.. The Golden Eagles tacked on an unearned run in the bottom sixth closing the game out 10-2.
 
Fish (2-1) was tagged with the loss. She went 4.0 innings, allowing 13 hits and nine runs. McCauley pitched 1.1 innings allowing three hits and one unearned run. For Brockport, Michaela Contreras (4-0) went the distance with two K's, five hits and one earned run.
 
The Bears are back in action tomorrow at 2 p.m. as they face Geneseo.
