Statesmen edge Bears

POTSDAM, N.Y.- Hobart College (1-2-1) held on to shut out the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (4-2) Thursday night, 1-0.  Senior defender Hunter Critchlow (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) scored the goal for the Statesmen.

Play was even throughout most of the first half with a lot of back and forth in the middle of the field. Hobart scored the lone goal of the game at the 17:40 minute mark, off a corner kick from freshman forward Pete Critchlow (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport). The Statesmen lined up in front of the goal and Critchlow legged the corner kick to the far side of the goal and Hunter Critchlow headed it past Mitchell for the 1-0 lead. Potsdam had three shots during the first, but senior goalie Morgan Sawyer (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) was untested with sophomore goalie Jakeb Mitchell (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) making one save. Hobart took the 1-0 lead into the break.

Potsdam's offensive put on more pressure in the second half with multiple scoring opportunities, but the Statemens' defense answered. Hobart stayed tough and only allowed the Bears five shots during the last 40 minutes, none of which were on goal. Mitchell stopped three more shots to keep the Bears in the game, but Potsdam was unable to find the back of the net. Sawyer ended the contest with no saves in the victory.

Hobart held the advantage in corner kick, 5-2 while each team had eight shots during the game.

The Bears will travel to RPI Saturday to battle the Engineers at 4 p.m.
