Lyons outlast Bears in Cardinal Classic finale, Tompkins named to all-tourney team

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.—Wheaton College (Mass.) (4-0) rallied a past the SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (2-1) 3-2 on Saturday afternoon in the finale of the Cardinal Classic. Senior outside hitter Kelsey Tompkins (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) was named to the all-tournament team for her consistently strong play.
 
The Bears battled their way to a 2-0 advantage with 25-21 and 31-29 victories in the opening two sets. The Lyons then captured the final three sets 25-12, 25-19 and 15-9. Tompkins had 10 kills and six blocks and senior opposite Kelsea Healis (Rohnert Park, Calif./Rancho Coate) finished with 10 kills, five aces, two blocks and eight assists. Senior outside hitter Rachel Topf (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak) posted seven kills, two aces, two blocks and 12 digs. Junior setter Brianna Rodda (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) totaled 31 assists and sophomore setter Gabrielle Scott (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) registered 15 digs.
 
The Bears are back in action on Friday when they host St. Lawrence at 6 p.m. and Keuka at 8 p.m. on the first day of the North Country Invitational.
