POTSDAM, N.Y.—St. Lawrence University (2-1) scored in the 61st minute and made it stand up in a 1-0 hard fought win over the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (2-1) on Tuesday night. Bears sophomore goalkeeper
Delphine Léonard (Montreal, Quebec/Dawson College Prep) was outstanding in goal with 10 saves. Saints freshman forward Emily Wade (Rochester, N.Y./Mercy) scored the game's lone goal.
The Bears pressured the Saints early, moving the ball well in SLU's end of the field. Potsdam created seven corner kicks in the first half. St. Lawrence slowly evened out the game and tested Léonard three times in succession about the 21st minute. Potsdam goalkeeper showed her athleticism and kept the contest scoreless.
While teams continued to be evenly matched in the second half, the Bears were able to put more pressure SLU's defense. Despite being outshot, the Saints defense didn't bend and gave the offense all the time it needed. At 60:33, junior forward Kaleigh White (Middleton, Mass./Masconomet Regional) found Wade between Bears defenders and she scored the decisive tally. Léonard stopped two more Saints chances with about 14 minutes to go, but Potsdam didn't allow another shot after that point. With 5:13 remaining, freshman forward
Lexi Dean (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) caught a pass inside the box and spun around while shooting, but SLU freshman goalie Samantha Allen (Ringwood, N.Y./Immaculate Heart Academy) corralled it. The Saints ran out the clock the rest of the way along the sidelines, without risking turning over the ball.
Allen also had a strong game in goal, making seven saves to earn the shutout. SLU edged the Bears in shots, 14-13, but Potsdam finished with a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Four of the last five meetings between the teams have been one-goal decisions.
The Bears are back in action against New England College at the Pilgrim's Tournament in Henniker, N.H. on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Potsdam is 3-0-1 all-time against NEC.
