FREDONIA, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (4-9-2, 0-7-1) rallied for a 1-1 draw at SUNY Fredonia (4-9-2, 1-6-1) on Friday afternoon. Sophomore midfielder
Justin Crovetto (Highland Mills, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) scored for the Bears and junior goalkeeper
Jakeb Mitchell (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) finished with four saves.
The first half was tightly contested as Potsdam finished with a 7-6 edge in shots. However, it was the Blue Devils that drew first blood on a goal from Matt Cullen at 27:15. Crovetto countered with just 43 seconds left in the half with a helper from junior forward
Brandon Igiehon (Dublin, Ireland/Channel View School). All the scoring was finished after the first 45 minutes.
The Bears controlled the second half with a 9-4 advantage in shots and 3-1 edge in corner kicks, but were unable to crack Fredonia's defense. Blue Devils goalie Ty Bentham made three saves in the final period.
Junior forwards
Alejandro Callejas (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) and
Teddy Bruschini (Wilton, N.Y./South Glens Falls) each tested Bentham with shots in the first overtime session, but he corralled each one. Senior forward
Matt Saddlemire (Gansevoort, N.Y./Schuylerville) fired the only shot of the second overtime, but again Bentham made the stop to preserve the tie.
Bentham made 10 saves on the afternoon. Potsdam outshot Fredonia 19-10 and had 11 corners to the Blue Devils' nine.
The Bears will finish SUNYAC play tomorrow afternoon when they head to Buffalo State for a 1 p.m. match.
