Golden Knights down Bears 3-0 in season finale

POTSDAM, N.Y.--- The SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (4-11-2) concluded its season hosting the Clarkson University Golden Knights (10-5-1) Tuesday night and fell by a 3-0 score. Although the Bears created more opportunities in the second half, Clarkson limited Potsdam for much of the game. The Knights also controlled the ball much of the second half, resulting in the two goals.

The Golden Knights scored the first goal of the game off a free kick from sophomore midfielder Matt Adamou (New Milford, Conn./New Milford). Junior goalkeeper Jakeb Mitchell (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport), had two hands on the ball, but wasn't able to prevent the shot from going into the goal. On Potsdam's end, they had difficulty cracking the Clarkson defense in the first half. After their first goal at the 11:41 mark, the Golden Knights offense was often stopped by Mitchell. However, the Knights possessed the ball much of the half and it allowed them to maintain their 1-0 lead going into the break.

A free kick from freshman forward Jhonny Mendoza (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) nearly tied the game early in the second half, however the shot whistled wide. Sophomore midfielder Evan Yeigh (Chester, Vt./Green Mountain Union) made it 2-0 for the visitors after the ball bounced off of another Clarkson midfielder's leg, and Yeigh tapped the ball in with his right foot at 68:56. The Bears, trying to respond, saw their best opportunity to score in the game when junior forward Alejandro Callejas (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) shot the ball after a throw in, but grazed the top of the crossbar. The Bears saw a repeat of the first goal from Clarkson late in the second half on a marker from junior forward Henry Gomez (Germantown, Md./Northwest). Gomez challenged Mitchell, who deflected the ball but couldn't prevent it from crossing the line at 87:10.

Clarkson had a 13-11 advantage in shots, but Potsdam finished with a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Mitchell had seven saves for the Bears. Golden Knight senior goalkeeper Riley McDonald (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) made two saves in the first 84:02. Sophomore Noah Bell (Peterborough, N.H./Conval) stopped one shot in the last 5:58.

The contest marks the end of the careers of five Potsdam seniors, Michael Hunter-Wofford (Sacramento, Calif./Orange Coast College), Matt Saddlemire (Gansevoort, N.Y./Schuylerville), Jorge Ferrer (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger), Tyler Mullery (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) and Danny Anglim (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point).
