Bears push Blue Devils to the brink before falling 3-2 in SUNYAC Quarters

FREDONIA, N.Y.—The fifth-seeded SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (13-18) took No. 4 seed SUNY Fredonia (22-9) to five sets before falling 3-2 on Tuesday night in the SUNYAC Quarterfinals.

The Bears took set one 25-23 and fell in set two by the same score. Potsdam claimed set three 25-21, but a late rally allowed the Blue Devils to take set four 26-24 after a late rally. Fredonia then clinched the victory with a 15-7 win in set five.

Sophomore outside hitter Gabby Scott (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) and sophomore middle hitter Monica Mack (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) each led the Bears with 12 kills apiece, while sophomore outside hitter Nicole Hansen (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) added 10. Mack also had five blocks and Hansen had two aces and a block. Scott also chipped in 13 digs. Junior outside hitter Xanara Ruiz (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) totaled three aces. Junior libero Natalie Magallon (Commerce, Calif./Bell Gardens) had a match-high 27 digs along with three assists and two aces. Senior setter Brianna Rodda (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) closed out her career with 35 assists and 11 digs.

The contest marked the end of the careers of seniors Cashlynn Jaggers (Massena, N.Y./Massena), Rachel Pridell (Lowville, N.Y./Lowville), Maddie Kaplan (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) and Rodda. While the leadership and hard work of each senior will be sorely missed, Rodda will be especially difficult to replace. A strong leader on and off the court, she set the Bears program record for assists this season and reached the double milestones of 3,000 assists and 1,000 digs, finishing her career with 3,537 assists and 1,076 digs.
