CANTON, N.Y.-- The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (2-2) defeated SUNY Canton (0-2) 74-58 on the final day of the Kevin Fee Roos Classic, Sunday afternoon. Freshman forward
Devyn Elliott (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) went 14-19 from the field and finished with 31 points and three steals.
The largest lead of the first quarter was four points by the Bears, as neither team could pull away from the other. The Roos ended the first up 16-13 with Sade Rogers leading the team with four points. Elliott led the first quarter scoring overall with eight, while freshman guard
Dyamon Hunter (Bronx, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall) and sophomore guard
Mia Jackson (Bronx, N.Y./Mott Hall V) scored the other five points for Potsdam.
Senior guard
Riley Luckie (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg) started the second quarter with a three pointer and sparked a 14-0 run for the Bears. Elliott scored seven and Hunter added four during the stretch. Canton edged out Potsdam in the final 5:12 of the first half 12-8, however the Bears entered halftime up 35-28.
Potsdam shut down Canton in the third, outscoring them 20-4. Elliott led the Bears, scoring 10 in the third. Sophomore center
Naya Walters (Bronx, N.Y./Women's Academy of Excellence) had four, while Hunter, Jackson, and sophomore forward
Nicole Hansen (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) each scored two. Potsdam went into the fourth up 55-32.
The fourth quarter started with a quick 10-5 Bears run with sophomore guard
Carly Shear (Newark, N.Y./Newark) hitting two shots beyond the arc. The Roos then had a 18-4 push of their own. Breanna Cullers and Jennifer Morgan-Aubin led Canton during the stretch with five points. Despite the late run, Potsdam held onto the lead and won 74-58.
Hunter ended the game with 11 points, seven assists and three steals. Hansen finished with eight points, while Jackson had four points, and a team high five steals.
Morgan-Aubin and Tyberia Wallace had 12 points and were the leading scorers for the Roos. Cullers was the only other double digit scorer with 10, and added six rebounds and three steals.
The Bears had the advantage in rebounds 35-26, and shot 45.1% from the field compared to the Roos 40.5%.
Potsdam is back in action Tuesday as they host Hamilton at 6 p.m. in Jerry Welsh Gymnasium.
