Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

No.1/2 Cards down Bears again

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.—No. 1/2 Plattsburgh State (19-2-2, 13-0-1 NEWHL) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (11-10-2, 3-9-2) 5-0 on SUNDAY afternoon. Sophomore goalie Kayla McCabe (Watertown, N.Y./Syracuse Nationals) made 42 saves for the Bears.

Courtney Moriarty scored her third goal of the weekend just 18 seconds into the contest. After Potsdam killed off consecutive power plays early in the first period, Mackenzie Millen netted an unassisted marker at the 15:16 mark. Just 2:46 later, Annie Katonka made it a 3-0 game with her second goal in as many days. With 10 seconds remaining in the period, Erin McArdle buried a power-play goal and Plattsburgh took the four-goal advantage into the break. McCabe stopped 17 shots in the opening period.

The Bears killed another penalty in the opening minutes of the middle period. However, Melissa Sheeran tacked on a fifth and final goal at 9:49. McCabe was solid in the second period as well with another 17 stops.

Potsdam killed a final Cardinal man advantage midway through the third period. The Bears earned two of their own the rest of the way. The last came with 50 seconds left. Potsdam called timeout and pulled McCabe in a gamble to get on the board. However, Plattsburgh handled the threat and closed out the shutout. McCabe made eight saves in the final 20 minutes.

Division I transfer Brooke Wolejko made 23 stops to earn the shutout. The Cardinals were 1-for-5 on the power play and the Bears were 0-for-3.

Potsdam closes out the regular season with a home-and-home series with Oswego State next weekend. The Bears host the Lakers at 7 p.m. on Friday for Senior Night. They then head to Oswego for a 2 p.m. contest on Saturday.

Potsdam isn't finished with Plattsburgh yet. The Bears will square off with the Cardinals  for a fifth time on Saturday, Feb. 24, in Plattsburgh in the inaugural NEWHL Semifinals.
