Bears hammer Spartans, 13-3

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (3-5) used a big second quarter to put the game out of reach in a 13-3 victory over Castleton University (3-5) on Tuesday evening. Senior attackman Eric Soderquist (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) continued his hot streak with four goals and an assist. Senior attackman Lukas Baildon (Berlin, Germany/JFKS Berlin) had a career-high four points on three goals and an assist. Sophomores Josh Huiatt (Lisbon, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) and Nick Slate (Saugerties, N.Y./Saugerties) each added two goals and two assists.
 
Huiatt opened the scoring at the 8:46 mark with an assist from junior midfielder Ryan Waldron (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse). Spartans junior midfielder Colin Clark (Rutland, Vt./Rutland) tied the game just over four minutes later, but Potsdam responded with a 9-0 run to seize control of the contest. Six seconds after Castleton's goal, senior Marc Leveroni (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) won the faceoff and fed Soderquist for his first of the night. The Bears led 2-1 after one.
 
Potsdam outscored Castleton 6-0 in the second quarter. Leveroni won the opening faceoff clean and went in all alone for his first career goal at 14:51. At 12:26 sophomore attackman Tayte Murray fed Soderquist for a 4-1 advantage. Baildon scored the next two in a row at 11:15 and 7:40 with assists from Slate and junior midfielder Gabe Carbone (Accord, N.Y./Rondout Valley). Soderquist set up Huiatt at 5:35 and then scored his third with a helper from Slate at 2:20. The Bears held an 8-1 advantage at the half.
 
Baildon completed his hat trick at 12:14 of the third quarter and junior long-stick midfielder Colby Chapman (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) assisted on Slate's first goal at 8:04. Junior midfielder Jason Sedell (Pine Brook, N.Y./DePaul Catholic) ended the Spartans' drought with goals at 5:35 and 4:44 and Castleton trailed 10-3 after 45 minutes.
 
Potsdam netted the only three goals of the final quarter to close out the 10-goal victory. Huiatt assisted on Carbone's tally at 13:30. Baildon fed Slate at 12:38 and Soderquist scored his fourth with helper from Huiatt at 9:30.
 
Bears junior goalie Zach Sheridan (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) made five saves and allowed three goals in 49:58 to earn his third career win. Fellow Junior Sean Coe (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) made two saves in 7:35 and freshman Mike Nowak (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) didn't face a shot in his 2:27 collegiate debut. Castleton junior goalie Brandon Myron (Rensselaer, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) was tagged with the loss after allowing 10 goals and making five saves in the first 36:56. Freshman Maxx Ingison (Manchester, Vt./Burr Burton Academy) made seven saves and allowed three goals in the last 23:04.
 
Junior defender Cole Zeller (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) had an outstanding day with a game-high nine ground balls and five caused turnovers. Leveroni won 11 of his 17 faceoffs on the night.
 
The Bears are back in action on Saturday afternoon when they head to Brockport to open SUNYAC play at 1 p.m.
