Bears erase early deficit for 2-1 win at Hobart

GENEVA, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (3-2-1) rallied past Hobart College (1-2-1) 2-1 with two second half markers on Thursday afternoon. Bears junior forward Alejandro Callejas (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) stayed hot and netted his fourth goal of the season. Junior goalie Jakeb Mitchell (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) finished with eight saves.

The Statesmen were able to generate good pressure early in the contest and keep the ball in the Potsdam end. Mitchell stopped a quality chance from Derrick Acheampong in the opening minutes. However, at the 6:33 mark Mouhamed Diouf finished an odd man rush by launching the ball into top left corner of  the net. The Bears withstood and decreased the pressure over the rest of the half and the score was unchanged at the break. Mitchell stopped three shots in the opening period.

Potsdam was able to reverse the course of the contest in the second half. The Bears defense was able to slow down Hobart and give their offense a chance to get back into the contest. Finally at 62:07, Callejas picked up a loose ball in front of the net and drove it past Statesmen goalie Alec Kaminer to tie the score. Hobart ramped up the pressure again after the goal, but had trouble hitting the net despite generating shots. When they did, Mitchell was there to frustrate them. His play allowed the Bears to grab their first lead at 82:31. After constant harassment by junior midfielder Teddy Bruschini (Wilton, N.Y./South Glens Falls) a Statesmen defender kicked the ball into his own goal for a 2-1 Potsdam lead. Three minutes later, Hobart's August Martini was awarded a free kick from 25 yards out, but Mitchell made a diving stop and his defense cleared the ball. The Bears immediately responded with shots from Callejas and senior midfielder Matt Saddlemire (Gansevoort, N.Y./Schuylerville), but saves from Kaminer prevented an insurance marker. Potsdam didn't allow another Statesmen shot the rest of the way.

Kaminer made five stops on the afternoon.

Hobart outshot the Bears 15-11 and had eight corner kicks to Potsdam's five. The victory was the Bears' first in four meetings with Hobart. Mitchell now has 11 victories, tying him for fourth place on the program's all-time list.

Potsdam looks to continue its momentum when RPI invades Maxcy Turf Field on Saturday at 1 p.m.
