Fast start lifts Cardinals over Bears, 3-1

POTSDAM, N.Y.--- The SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (4-5-1, 0-3 SUNYAC) fell 3-1 to the visiting Plattsburgh State Cardinals (4-4-2, 2-1 SUNYAC) on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals stayed on the attack all evening outshooting the Bears 15-8 to go along with a 7-0 corner kick advantage. Senior midfielder Chris Robertson (Thiells, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional) scored twice for the visitors, while freshman midfielder Quinn Graziano (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Rhinebeck)  scored his first collegiate goal for the Bears.

The first goal of the game came at the 16:40 mark of the first half from midfielder senior Alex Price (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown). The Bears only had one defender on Price about six feet from the goal which prompted junior goalkeeper Jakeb Mitchell (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) to gamble and help out sophomore defender Eduardo Sanchez (Greenport, N.Y./Greenport). Price took advantage and scored for the Cardinals. The visitors struck again at 27:54 when Robertson took advantage of a Potsdam turnover and was able to break away from the defense on the left wing. Senior midfielder Tyler Mullery (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) tried to slow him down, but lost his footing and the Bears' keeper couldn't stop Robertson's drive. Plattsburgh created a 5-0 edge in corner kicks in the first 45 minutes. The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead heading into the second half.

The Bears nearly got back in the game at the very beginning of the next period. Junior midfielder Alejandro Callejas (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) came out aggressive for the home team, using the defense as a screen and sending a bullet to the goal, but the Cardinals' keeper Ryan Wilson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) dived in front just in time. Robertson scored his second goal late in the half at 80:15 on an assist from junior Jimmy Marchena (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) to extend the lead for the visitors to 3-0. The Bears got on the scoreboard late by drawing out the Cardinals' keeper on a direct kick from freshman midfielder Jhonny Mendoza (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) at 86:32. That allowed Graziano to bury the rebound. However, the Bears had run out of time.

Mitchell had six saves for the Bears and Wilson had three for Plattsburgh.

The Bears are now off until Friday when they travel to Cortland to take on the red hot Red Dragons at 4 p.m.
