Bears rally past Canton, Rodda and Hansen named all-tourney

CANTON, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (7-10) rallied from a 2-0 hole for a 3-2 victory at SUNY Canton (9-7) in the finale of the Canton Classic Tournament on Saturday. Senior setter Brianna Rodda (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) and sophomore outside hitter Nicole Hansen (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) were each named to the all-tournament team.

After falling 3-0 in Potsdam 11 days ago, the Kangaroos used their home court advantage to surprise the Bears and put them on the ropes with 25-20 and 25-13 victories in the first two sets. Potsdam began its comeback with a 25-18 win in set three and then edged Canton 25-23 in the fourth to force a fifth set. There, the Bears pulled away late for the 15-10 win.

Hansen was red hot for Potsdam with career and game-high 14 kills along with five digs, three blocks and an ace. Sophomore outside hitter Gabby Scott (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) had another strong day with nine kills and 19 digs. Sophomore middle hitter Monica Mack (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) recorded eight kills and four blocks and junior outside hitter Xanara Ruiz (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) also had four blocks. Junior libero Natalie Magallon (Commerce, Calif./Bell Gardens) finished with a contest-best 23 digs. Rodda, who surpassed 3,000 assists yesterday, finished with a game-high 38 assists and five aces.

The Bears are back in action on Friday when they head to SUNY New Paltz for the second SUNYAC Pool Play weekend of the season. Potsdam faces Plattsburgh at 7 p.m. on Friday and then on Saturday the Bears square off with Fredonia at 2:30 p.m. and the host Hawks at 5 p.m.
