PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.— Senior midfielder
Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport)
had two goals and an assist as the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (9-2, 2-1 SUNYAC) defeated Plattsburgh State (5-5, 0-3) 3-0. The victory was the first over the Cardinals in program history. Senior midfielder
Rylie Murray (Berkley, Mich./Berkley) also scored and sophomore forward
Lexi Dean (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) had two assists. Junior goalkeeper
Delphine Léonard (Anjou, Quebec/Dawson College Prep) made seven saves for her 11th career victory and fourth shutout.
Potsdam controlled the play right out of the gate. The Bears dominated possession of the ball, not allowing a shot until 25 minutes into the contest. Potsdam opened the scoring at 10:12. Falsion was on the left side of the box and sent the ball back to Murray. Murray launched a high curving shot toward the top right corner of the goal to make it 1-0. Just 2:43 later, Dean capitalized on a fast break by drawing the defense and Cardinals goalie Taylor Adams to the right and feeding Falsion in front of the net. She easily tipped it into the goal to double the lead. At 27:20, the duo connected again. Falsion buried another Dean feed from the top of the box. Plattsburgh nearly evened the shots by the end of the half (9-8), but Bears junior goalkeeper
Delphine Léonard (Anjou, Quebec/Dawson College Prep) kept them off the board with four saves.
The shots remained even in the second half, but Potsdam had the better of the chances. Adams was forced to make six saves, but prevented the Bears from adding to the lead. Potsdam's best chance of the second half came at 74:00 when Dean hit the crossbar. Léonard stopped three more shots to slam the door. The closest call came at 83:30 when Kirsten Villemaire hit the post before Léonard could corral the ball.
The Bears outshot Plattsburgh 19-18 and had an 8-2 advantage in corners. Adams finished with 10 saves.
Falsion is now up to 41 goals and 14 assists for her career, giving her 96 points. She needs just six more to catch Jodi Ziemba '07 for the program's scoring title. Murray moved into fifth place all-time with her goal. She now has 57 points on 15 goals and 27 assists.
Next Friday, Potsdam is home for the first time in over three weeks when the Bears host SUNY Cortland at 4 p.m.
