POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (3-0) continued its winning ways as they rallied to defeat Clarkson University (1-1-1) 2-1 at Maxcy Turf Field on Tuesday evening. Senior midfielder
Rylie Murray (Berkley, Mich./Mich) assisted on goals from freshman forward
Mackenzie Bowie (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville) and senior midfielder
Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport). Junior goalie
Delphine Léonard (Anjou, Quebec/Dawson College Prep) made three saves for her eighth career victory.
Clarkson took the lead just 1:20 into the first half when junior midfielder Giulia Mahoney (Walworth, N.Y./Ganada) was able to get her second goal of the season on a header off a cross from senior forward Summer Gillespie (Morrisonville, N.Y./Saranac). The Bears were able to generate several opportunities, but found it difficult to get past Golden Knights junior goalie Elyse Green (Wilton, N.Y./South Glens Falls). Green had six stops in the first 45 minutes. Fortunately for Potsdam, Bowie was able to tie the score with her second goal of the season on a helper from Murray (Berkley, Mich./Berkley) at the 33:29 mark. The score was still even at the break.
Both the undefeated teams came out in the second period with more physicality. In the 53rd minute, Murray forced a turnover in the Clarkson end and fed the ball to Falsion at the left side of the box. She ran full speed toward Green and ultimately got the better of the keeper. After the go ahead goal, the home team remained on the attack with great passing. Senior forward
Amber Hyatt (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) showed great hustle late in the second period, finding Falsion waiting at the left side of the net for a pass. However, Falsion was not able to keep her footing as she tipped the ball wide of the left post. Clarkson had a tough time getting through the Bears defense as time wound down. They managed to test Léonard just twice in the second half and she adeptly handled each attempt.
Elyse Green finished with seven saves for Clarkson. The Bears outshot the Golden Knights 18-15 on the night and Clarkson finished with a 5-3 edge in corners.
The Bears are back in action on Friday when they travel to Henniker, N.H. for the New England College Tournament. Potsdam faces the host Pilgrims at 1 p.m. in the first round. On Saturday, the Bears battle Wentworth at 2:30 p.m. Potsdam is the defending tourney champion, having downed NEC 2-1 and Montclair State 3-2 in double overtime a year ago. Potsdam owns a 4-0-1 all-time mark against NEC and has never faced Wentworth.
