POTSDAM, N.Y.-- The SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (8-6, 4-3 SUNYAC) relied on free throws late in the second half to defeat SUNY Fredonia (1-11, 1-5 SUNYAC) 75-72 on Saturday afternoon. Senior forward
Dante Langley (Schuylerville, N.Y./Schuylerville) had the game-high 25 points and added six rebounds. Senior guard
Nosa Onabor (Brooklyn, N.Y./Northside Carter) had 14 points, six rebounds and three steals.
Through the beginning of the first neither team had more than a five point lead. Following a three pointer by Blue Devils De'Quan Smith, the Bears went on a 18-9 run. During the stretch, Langley led with eight points, junior guard
Aaron Armstrong (Lisbon, N.Y./Madrid-Waddington) and sophomore forward
Dante Viskovich (Massena, N.Y./Massena) each had three. Before the run came to a halt, the Bears had a 26-20 lead with 6:41 remaining in the half. Fredonia closed out the half outscoring Potsdam 15-9, going into halftime tied at 35.
The first few minutes of the second half was similar to the first as neither team could run away with the game. Langley and Onabor kept the Bears in the contest scoring the first eight points in the half. The game was tied at 43 with 15:54 left to go, junior guard
Danny Delsol-Lowry (Queens, N.Y./Queens High School of Teaching) made a layup to spark a 15-0 run for the next four minutes. During the stretch Delsol-Lowry had six, Langley had five, Onabor and junior guard
Jayquan Thomas (Hollis, N.Y./Richmond Hill) each had two. The Blue Devils answered back with a 14-2 stretch to cut the deficit to three with 9:45 remaining. Potsdam maintained the lead until 1:53 after Smith stole the ball and made a fastbreak layup. With 43 seconds left, Langley took advantage from the charity stripe and made two free throws to regain the lead. The next possession for Fredonia Smith missed the layup, Messiah Hill got the offensive rebound and went for the putback only to be blocked by Armstrong at a crucial moment for the Bears. Langley then got fouled with 10 seconds remaining and hit both free throws to make it a three point game. The Blue Devils did not get the game-tying shot off as Delsol-Lowry came up with a steal, to secure a 75-72 victory.
Delsol-Lowry had 12 points and Thomas had six points with the team-high eight rebounds.
Bediako Nyasa led Fredonia with 15 points. Mark Morgan finished with a 14 point 10 rebound double-double, and Smith finished with 11 points and three steals.
The Blue Devils shot 44.6 percent from the field while the Bears shot 35.6 percent.
Potsdam is back in action on Friday as they travel to face SUNY Cortland at 7:30 p.m. Â Â
