POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Canton (7-7-2) scored twice in the third period and again in 40 seconds into overtime to hand the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (6-10) a 4-3 defeat. Sophomore forward
Joey Sollazzo (Ottawa, Ontario/Navan Grads), freshman forward
Jack Bloem (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Connecticut Rangers) and junior forward
Tyler Young (Massena, N.Y./Kanata Lasers) each scored for the Bears.
The Kangeroos struck quickly in the first period. Freshman Adam Petric (Toronto, Ontario/Toronto Patriots) broke free on the left side after a long cross-ice pass in the neutral zone and made it 1-0 at 2:26. Potsdam outshot the Roos 16-9 in the opening 20 minutes, some chances coming on two power-play opportunities, but still trailed at the close of the period.
The Bears continued the pressure in the second period and penalties kept Canton on the defensive. Potsdam finally evened the score at 14:48. Sophomore
Jake Juron (Latham, N.Y./South Shore Kings) started the breakout with a pass into the neutral zone for senior captain
Ben Mariano (Harrisburg, Pa./Hartford Wolfpack). Mariano carried puck into the right corner and sent it the side of the net where Sollazzo tapped it past Canton junior goalie Michael Cerasuolo Jr. (Montreal, Quebec/Brockville Braves). The game was still even after two periods.
The Bears scored twice in the first three and a half minutes of the third period. After crashing the net, Bloem fired a rebound past Cerasuolo at 2:34. Junior forward
Nate Zweig (Binghamton, N.Y./Syracuse Stars) and sophomore forward
Brett Horn (Cary, N.C./Humboldt Broncos) each assisted on the goal. Just 57 seconds later Young scored on a similar play with assists from Zweig and Bloem. Canton closed to within one after junior forward Tyson Bruce (Aurora, Ontario/Oswego State) finished an odd-man rush with at 15:24. The game remained tight as time ticked away. With 1:06 remaining, Canton called timeout and pulled Cerasuolo for an extra attacker. The strategy worked as the Roos were rewarded with the equalizer from sophomore forward Jake Mayette (Madrid, N.Y./Syracuse Stars) with 45 seconds left.
Canton won the contest just 40 seconds into overtime as a centering pass bounced off the body of junior forward Tyson Bullard (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Northern Cyclones) and past Bears senior assistant captain
Nate Skidmore (Syracuse, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres).
Skidmore finished with 29 saves, while Cerasuolo stopped 46 shots. The Roos were 0-for-2 on the man advantage and Potsdam finished 0-for-5.
The Bears are back in action when they host SUNYAC foe Morrisville State for two 7 p.m. contests on Friday and Saturday.
