Bears battle to 1-1 tie at Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (5-8-3, 3-3-2 NEWHL) took three of four points from Oswego State (6-4-3, 3-3-2) this weekend after 1-1 tie on the road on Saturday night. Freshman forward Stephanie Dunlap (Bath, Mich./Meijer U19 AAA) scored for the Bears and sophomore goalie Samantha White (Oceanside, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) finished with 30 saves.

The Bears and Lakers battled evenly in the first period. Oswego edged Potsdam 11-9 in shots, but the Bears got on the board first. Dunlap made it 1-0 at 12:00 with assists from sophomore forward Emily Burke (San Jose, Calif./San Jose Jr. Sharks) and senior captain Rylie Murray (Berkley, Mich./Honeybaked). Each team had an unsuccessful man advantage and the score was unchanged at the break.

Despite four power plays in the second period, the teams managed just 13 shots on goal. Potsdam was unable to add to its lead on three opportunities and White and her defense kept the Lakers off the board on their only chance. The Bears remained on top after 40 minutes.

Oswego finally tied the game at 8:13. Leah Czerwinski scored her second goal of the series to help the Lakers salvage a point. Each team had a final power play in the period, but was unable to claim the go-ahead marker.

Oswego accounted for the only three shots in overtime, but White handled each to preserve the draw.

Lakers goalie Rachael Farmer made 20 saves. The Bears were 0-for-5 on the man advantage and Oswego was 0-for-3.

Next, Potsdam heads to Buffalo State for two games beginning on Friday at 7 p.m.
