POTSDAM, N.Y.—In a game rescheduled from 10 days ago, the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (6-13-1, 2-8-1 SUNYAC) fought to a 4-4 tie with Morrisville State (4-13-2, 2-9-1) on Tuesday night. Freshman forward
Rob Clerc (Wappinger Falls, N.Y./Oswego State) scored his first two collegiate goals to lead the Bears. Sophomore forward
Brett Horn (Cary, N.C./Humboldt Broncos) and senior defenseman
Trevor Dennis (Rochester, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) also contributed a goal and an assist each.
Mustang senior forward Ian Wood (Pittsburgh, Pa./Palm Beach Hawks) opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 5:53 of the first period. Horn countered with a goal on the man advantage at 8:34 with assists from junior forward
Bryce Ferrell (Buffalo, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and freshman forward
Tom Terranova (Middletown, N.J./Syracuse Stars). Clerc netted his first to give Potsdam a 2-1 lead at 12:21. Junior assistant captain
Vincent Guimond (Sorel-Tracy, Quebec/Gloucester Rangers) assisted on the even-strength marker. The teams alternated penalties over the last five minutes of the period, but the score was unchanged.
Morrisville junior forward Ryan Bochert (Denver, Colo./Hampton Roads Whalers) scored the only goal of the middle stanza, tying the game at the 11:53 mark. Each team had an unsuccessful power play late in the second. The teams headed into a wild third period still tied at 2-2.
Four goals were scored in the last 20 minutes. At 3:40, Horn and Dennis set up Clerc's second goal for a 3-2 lead. Just 1:06 later, Dennis gave the Bears their largest lead of the contest with assists from sophomore defenseman
Jon Venter (Guilford, Conn./Syracuse Stars) and junior forward
Tyler Young (Massena, N.Y./Kanata Lasers). However, Morrisville stormed back. Senior forward Jimmy Philbin (Chicago, Ill./Mattawa Blackhawks) struck at 8:39. The Bears held on the one goal lead and killed off a penalty during the next 9:55. At 18:27, the Mustangs pulled junior goalie Jared Young (Pueblo West, Colo./Dells Ducks) and seven seconds later, senior forward C.J. Stubbs (Pleasant Grove, Utah/Hawkesbury Hawks) tied the score.
Thanks in part to a power play, Potsdam outshot the Mustangs 8-4 in overtime, but neither team could find the game-winner.
Young finished with 37 saves, while Bears senior assistant captain
Nate Skidmore (Syracuse, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) made 35 saves.
Potsdam outshot Morrisville 41-39 and was 1-for-6 on the power play. The Mustangs finished 1-for-4 on the man advantage.
The Bears return to action on Saturday night when they head to Plattsburgh for a 7 p.m. contest.
