POTSDAM, N.Y.-- The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (7-11, 4-8 SUNYAC) defeated Plattsburgh State (8-11, 5-7 SUNYAC) 67-66 on Tuesday night. Senior guard
Abbey Smith (Bainbridge, N.Y./Bainbridge-Guilford) helped overcome the Cardinals with a pair of free throws with 0.1 seconds remaining. Freshman guard
Dyamon Hunter (Bronx, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) had the game-high 23 points and sophomore
Naya Walters (Bronx, N.Y./Women's Academy of Excellence) had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Both teams stayed with one another during the first. Kelly Degnan gave Plattsburgh a 7-3 lead with a three followed by a layup off a Potsdam turnover with 7:14 in the first. The Bears answered back with an offensive putback by freshman forward
Devyn Elliott (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) then a three-pointer by Smith to regain the lead at 5:30. The Cardinals defense kept the Bears scoreless for the remaining 3:40 of the first and scored four points to put them up 13-10.
Down seven with 7:05 in the second, Walters started a 7-0 run for the Bears with a putback layup. During the stretch Hunter made a three and Smith capped it off with a fastbreak layup. With a tied game and 4:33 remaining in the half Plattsburgh took control and went on a 14-5 run, entering halftime up 33-24. The Cardinals had four different scorers during the push with Bella DePasquale leading with six, while Hunter scored all five for Potsdam.
The Bears started the third in control as they went on a 10-3 run for the first four minutes. Down 42-36 with 2:48 to go in the third, Hunter hit a three to begin a 9-2 push for the Bears. Following the three, Walters made the next six points, giving Potsdam a 45-44 lead heading into the fourth.
Plattsburgh began the fourth on a 6-0 stretch, giving themselves a five point advantage. Senior guard
Riley Luckie (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg) halted the run with a three putting the Bears within two. Several baskets were traded between both teams until Hunter hit back-to-back shots beyond the arc to give Potsdam a 56-54 lead with 4:40 to play. The Cardinals followed up with a 10-3 run to put them up five with 1:35 to go. Degnan and Ly'rell Walker scored all 10 points for Plattsburgh during the push. Walter's answered back with a layup to put the Bears within three with 1:24 left. Taylor Durnin answered back with a layup of her own to regain the five point lead. On the next possession, Smith brought the deficit back to three with a basket with 52 seconds left. Luckie then made it a one point game with 12 seconds remaining. After Plattsburgh missed critical free throws, Potsdam took a time out with eight seconds to go. On the final possession Smith got fouled on the jumper with 0.1 seconds on the clock, made both free throws and helped the Bears win 67-66.
Smith ended the game with 13 points and four assists. Elliott finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double.
Durnin led the Cardinals with 18 points and tallied seven rebounds. Degnan had 17 points and 12 rebounds, while DePasquale ended with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Potsdam shot 40.3 percent from the field and Plattsburgh shot 36.1 percent from the field.
This is the Bears first victory over the Cardinals since February 1, 2011.
Potsdam returns to action on Friday as they travel to take on Fredonia at 5:30 p.m.
