Oswego tops Potsdam, 2-0

POTSDAM, N.Y. --- The SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (3-11-1, 1-5 SUNYAC) fell to the Oswego State Lakers (9-4-1, 4-1-1 SUNYAC) 2-0 on Friday afternoon. Senior forward Caleb Asamoah (Three Mile Bay, N.Y./Lyme Central) and freshman forward Steven Rojas (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem) scored the two goals of the afternoon for the visiting Lakers.

The contest started off fairly even with both defenses shutting down the opposing team's offensive attacks. With just under 30 minutes left in the half, Lakers senior midfielder Jack Van Pelt (Otisville, N.Y./Minisink Valley) received a pass from a teammate near the penalty area and sent a shot to the net, but Potsdam sophomore goalie Conor Callen (Piermont, N.Y./Tappen Zee) was there to dive for the ball and record his first save. The Bears had excellent opportunities early as well. Senior forward Teddy Bruschini (Wilton, N.Y./South Glens Falls) nearly beat Oswego junior goalkeeper Brian Terra (Bay Shore, N.Y./Sachem North) to the ball, but was a split second late as the goalie secured it. The Lakers would eventually break the ice and score at the 16:52 mark of the first quarter. Rojas worked and slipped past several Bears defenders and sent it to Asamoah, who's shot from close range found the back of the net.

The two Lakers would reverse roles early in the second half. At the 36:06 mark, Asamoah got past Bears defenders and left the ball in front of the net for Rojas to deposit it. While Potsdam's defense was able to contain the Lakers following the play, the Bears weren't able to get the opportunities necessary to overcome the 2-0 deficit.

Oswego outshot Potsdam 16-6, and amassed an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks. Callen finished with three saves.

The Bears host the Cortland Red Dragons tomorrow at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
