Bears swat Hornets, 96-79

LYNDONVILLE, VT.—The SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (3-0) came away with their third straight win as they defeated Northern Vermont University-Lyndon (2-3) 96-79 on Sunday afternoon. In a game where the Bears never trailed, three different players put up 20 points or better for Potsdam and two grabbed over 10 rebounds as well. Senior guard Danny Delsol-Lowry (Queens, N.Y./Queens H.S. of Teaching) led all scorers with 25 points and junior forward Brandon Segar Jr. (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King) posted a double-double with 24 points and 14 rebounds. Freshman center Tyrese Baptiste (Brooklyn, N.Y./Eagle Academy II) had 20 points and 10 rebounds.

The Bears started the game on a 9-0 run, ignited by Delsol-Lowry's three-point play, a transition layup plus the foul. Segar capped the run at the 17:49 mark when he got the defensive rebound, dribbled the length of the court and attacked the rim for his first score. The Hornets scored their first basket on a dunk by Jahleel Gabriel, as the forward received a bounce pass inside fromZach Falkenburg. The Bears took a brief 10-point lead, but Timothy Hoar's 3-pointer off an inbounds pass kept the Hornets in the game. A 10-0 run, started by two Delsol-Lowry free throws and finished by senior guard Jayquan Thomas' (Hollis, N.Y./Richmond Hill) transition layup, gave the Bears a 42-25 lead and forced a Hornet timeout. Out of the timeout, the Bears continued to build their lead with offensive rebounding and free-throw shooting. Potsdam's defense was also key in their 56-35 first half lead, as they racked up 12 thefts.

The Bears picked up where they left off on the defensive side to open the second half. Thomas intercepted a pass, dribbled to the other end of the court and made a layup for the first basket. The Hornets then built momentum as they went on a 24-7 run. With 9:13 to go, Gabriel brought the Hornets within single digits with an offensive putback to make it a 69-61 contest. Potsdam immediately responded with two layups from Baptiste and a 3-pointer from the top of the key by Delsol-Lowry. Following the run, the Bears were able to keep the Hornets from getting within striking distance and secured the 96-79 victory.

Thomas recorded 19 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out four assists for Potsdam. Denteh and Gabriel each put up 14 points for the Hornets, while Kyle Cary had 10 points and 12 rebounds.

The Bears finished with a 54-44 advantage in rebounds and shot 48-percent from the floor.

Potsdam will go to the Capital District on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. matchup with former SUNYAC rival and now Division I program, the Albany Great Danes.
