POTSDAM, N.Y.—The College at Brockport (2-0, 2-0 SUNYAC) scored two power-play goals in the third period to rally past the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (0-1-1, 0-1-1) 3-2 on Saturday night. Sophomore forward Rob Clerc (Wappinger Falls, N.Y./Oswego State) and senior assistant captain
Tyler Young (Massena, N.Y./Kanata Lasers) each scored for the Bears.
Golden Eagle junior forward Ryan Romeo (Fairport, N.Y./New Hampshire Monarchs) opened the scoring on a shot from the slot at 5:49. Clerc evened the score at 11:59. He dug the puck out of scrum along the boards and sent it to senior assistant captain
Sean Winikates (Phoenix, Ariz./Philadelphia Jr. Flyers) at the right point. Winikates fired and Clerc tipped the puck over the left pad of Brockport senior goalie Matt Schneider (Manlius, N.Y./Florida Eels) to tie the score. The score was still even at the break.
The teams traded 34 penalty minutes in the second period, but nothing changed until the end. After Brockport was called for a cross-check at 19:08, the Bears power play went back to work. With five seconds left, Clerc found Young in the slot for a one-timer that gave Potsdam a 2-1 lead.
The third period saw 23-more penalty minutes and it was a key factor in the contest's outcome. A tripping penalty gave Brockport its sixth power play and senior forward Doc Gentzler (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Hartford Jr. Wolfpack) made the most of it at the 3:17 mark to tie the score. Just over a minute later, Potsdam went to the box for a boarding call and at 4:50, freshman defenseman Anthony Hora (Clarence, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) made it 3-2 on a rocket from the right point. After the goal, the Potsdam skillfully killed off a five-minute major and then had two final power plays to try to even the score. After Brockport killed the first, they were called for a roughing penalty with 1:39 to go. The Bears called timeout and pulled sophomore goalie
Michael Paglucca (North Reading, Mass./New Hampshire Avalanche) for an extra attacker. However, the Golden Eagles were able to hang on and close out the win.
Paglucca finished with 25 saves and Schneider stopped 32 shots for the victory. Potsdam outshot Brockport 34-28 and was 1-for-6 on the power play. The Golden Eagles finished 2-for-8.
The Bears hit the road for Central New York next weekend. They face SUNY Cortland at 7 p.m. on Friday and No. 6 Oswego State at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
