Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Bears fall at Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y.—SUNY Cortland (2-0, 2-0 NEWHL) scored four second period goals, en route to a 5-2 win over the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (1-1, 1-1) on Saturday in NEWHL play. Senior forward Miranda Kolb (Watertown, N.Y./SUNY Cortland) and junior defenseman Keira Thacker (Oakville, Ontario/Hamilton Hawks) each scored for the Bears.

The first period was tightly contested with the shots 12-11 in favor of the Red Dragons. Bears senior goalie Kayla McCabe (Watertown, N.Y./Syracuse Nationals) and Cortland goaltender Chelsea Allain were each sharp. There were no penalties in the opening 20 minutes and the game was scoreless after one.

Quinn Metcalfe put the Red Dragons out in front for good at the 2:42 mark of the second period. Less than five minutes later Grace Schnorr made it a 2-0 contest. At 11:10, Kolb got Potsdam on the board with assists from junior forward Natalie Wasielewski (Carnegie, Pa./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) and senior captain Shelbi Thacker (Chesterfield, Mich./Honeybaked). Amanda Gaffney countered for Cortland just 1:18 later and Dany Donegan extended the lead to 4-1 with a power-play goal at 17:25. The score was unchanged as the contest headed into the second intermission.

At the 5:07 mark of the final period, Thacker buried an unassisted tally and gave the Bears a chance of clawing back into the game. However, Elena Eichmann answered 22 seconds later to close the scoring.

McCabe finished with 32 saves and Allain stopped 19 shots for the win. Cortland outshot the Bears 37-21 and was 1-for-3 on the power play. The Bears were 0-for-1 on the man advantage.

Potsdam is back in action next Friday night as the Bears host Buffalo State for a 7 p.m. contest. Potsdam gets another crack at the Red Dragons when they come to Maxcy Ice Arena next Saturday for a 3 p.m. matchup.
