ONEONTA, N.Y. –A jumper from Ian Schultz with four seconds left pushed the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons (3-3, 2-0 SUNYAC) past the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (5-2, 1-1 SUNYAC) 62-60 on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore guard
Isaiah Joseph (Harlem, N.Y./Izquierdo Health and Science Charter) led the Bears again with 20 points. Senior guard
Danny Delsol-Lowry (Queens, N.Y./Queens High School of Teaching) finished with 15 points and five rebounds.
The two teams traded shots behind-the-arc for the first points of the game. Kevin Mackin opened up the scoring with a catch-and-shoot three and Delsol-Lowry hit one of his own off with the assist from junior guard
Colby Simpson (Queens, N.Y./Queens High School of Teaching). The teams traded baskets for much of the half. The Red Dragons eventually created separation with a 9-0 run to close the first 20 minutes, which began and ended with Joseph Bull's reverse layup and three. Oneonta led 32-24 at the break.
The first score of the second half came at the 14:53 mark, a fast break layup from Deegan Harrison for Oneonta. The Red Dragons followed it up on their next possession with a free-throw line jumper from Bull. This gave the home team a 36-24 lead at 14:15, forcing a Bears timeout. Coming out of it, the Bears went on a 10-0 run, ignited by two baskets and the foul from Joseph, along with a jumper and fast break layup from freshman center
Tyrese Baptiste (Brooklyn, N.Y./Eagle Academy II). With Oneonta's lead down to 36-34, Schultz gave the Red Dragons breathing room with his three from the left wing. The Bears eventually tied the game at 44 with 7:36 left when Joseph sank a three off a drive-and-kick from Baptiste. The basket forced a Dragon timeout. With 6:02 remaining, the Bears took a 47-46 lead behind two Joseph free throws. At the 1:47 mark, down 57-53, Delsol-Lowry drew the foul and made both free throws to bring the Bears within two. Ahamadou Sillah (Bronx, N.Y./Kipp NYC College) completed a reverse layup, bringing them within 58-57 at 1:01. On the next play, Bull pump faked, and drilled a baseline jumper, but Joseph tied the game with 10 seconds left on another three. On the very next possession, Shultz hit a jumper from the top of the key, forcing the Bears to call a timeout with one second left. Coming out of the timeout, Delsol-Lowry just missed the game deciding jumper and the Dragons took home the 62-60 win.
Bull came away with 18 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out four assists. Schultz had 11 points and eight rebounds.
Baptiste added 12 points and 14 rebounds for Potsdam.
The Bears will play in the York Invitational next Friday at 5:30 p.m. against the host Cardinals.
