Golden Eagles hold off Bears in SUNYAC Playoffs, 94-88

BROCKPORT, N.Y. –The Brockport Golden Eagles (16-10) advanced to the SUNYAC Semifinals with a 94-88 victory over the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (13-13, 9-9 SUNYAC) on Tuesday. Senior guard Dante Langley (Schuylerville, N.Y./Schuyllerville) led the Bears with 22 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out five assists. Senior guard Nosa Onabor (Brooklyn, N.Y./Northside Charter) finished with 19 points and three rebounds.

Jahidi Wallace's three-point play with just over 14 minutes remaining in the first half gave the Golden Eagles some momentum and an early 13-8 lead. Junior guard Danny Delsol-Lowry (Queens, N.Y./Queens High School of Teaching) responded for the Bears with a deep 3-pointer from the right wing. At the midway mark of the first half, the two teams traded baskets. After junior guard  Jayquan Thomas (Hollis, N.Y./Richmond Hill) briefly tied the game at 15 with a pull-up jump shot from the free-throw line, Chris Atkinson hit a 3-pointer with a hand in his face coming out of a timeout. Then, after a missed three from the Golden Eagles, junior center Kristoff Saunders (Queens, N.Y./Queens High School of Teaching) dished it off to sophomore guard Colby Simpson (Queens, N.Y./Queens High School of Teaching) for a three of his own. Trailing in the later stages of the half, the Golden Eagles used an 17-4 run sparked by Danny Ashley's three, followed by his drive to the basket to take a 10 point lead at 42-32. With five seconds left, Simpson went to the line and made both free throws to get the Bears within single digits to close the quarter. The Golden Eagles led 42-34 at halftime.

The Bears used their outside shooting to get themselves back in the game early in the second half. The Golden Eagles briefly made it a double-digit game once again early before Onabor drilled a jumper from the right corner to make it 44-36 at 18:56. The Golden Eagles then went on another run to take a double-digit lead. At the 12:49 mark, after a missed Brockport alley oop, Langley hit a 3-pointer from the right corner to bring the Bears within 58-51, forcing a Brockport timeout. Coming out of the break, the Eagles went on an 11-4 run sparked by Antonio Alavrez's shot inside and was capped off with Devante Hagins' contact layup. The basket gave Brockport a 69-55 advantage with 8:29 left in regulation. Down by 14 with just under three minutes left, the Bears built momentum with a dunk by senior forward Sergine Kane (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Prep), followed by another dunk by Langley off an alley oop pass from Thomas. After a pair of three throws from Brockport, Onabor came back on the other end and hit a three from the top of the key and was fouled. With 59 seconds left, Langley was sent to the line where he made one of two, putting the game at 87-79. Coming out of another timeout, the Bears were able to continue to score within the final minute with a dunk from Kane and a three from Onabor. However, the Golden Eagles continued to make their free throws down the stretch to secure the 94-88 SUNYAC victory.

Ashley led all scorers with 34 points and dished out six assists to lead the Golden Eagles. Atkinson finished with 15 points and four assists.

The contest marks the conclusion of the careers of Kane, Langley, senior guard Tanner Stone (Schroon Lake, N.Y./Schroon Lake), Onabor, and senior guard Andrew Hoag (Hoosick Falls, N.Y./Hoosick Falls). After winning just four games in their first two seasons, the five Bears won 24 in the last two and just completed the program's most successful year since 2005-06.
