FREDONIA, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (7-13, 4-10 SUNYAC) fell to SUNY Fredonia (10-11, 7-7) 54-39 on Sunday. After a tightly contested first half, the Blue Devils built up a double-digit lead in the midst of the third quarter and continued to pull away in the fourth for the victory. Freshman forward Devyn Elliot (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Katie Pitcher's jumper with three minutes to go gave the Blue Devils a 15-8 lead midway through the first quarter and capped a 5-0 run, forcing a Bears timeout. Sophomore forward
Nicole Hansen (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) put an end to the near four minute scoring drought for the Bears by hitting a jumper from the corner. Each team added a bucket to end the opening 10 minutes and Fredonia led 18-12.
Rae White and Elliot opened up the scoring in the second quarter for each of their teams, respectively. First with Rae White controlling the Blue Devils fast-paced offense and scoring quickly on the drive and Elliot making a free-throw line jumper. Lauren Mickley gave Fredonia momentum after she finished the layup through contact and completed the three-point play at 6:07 to make it a 23-16 Blue Devil lead. Both teams struggled to score within the last few minutes of the second. Senior forward Victoria Shopvick (White Plains, N.Y./Maria Regina) scored for the Bears inside off the give and go pass from senior guard
Abbey Smith (Bainbridge, N.Y./Bainbridge-Guilford) for the last field goal of the half. The Blue Devils led 29-22 at halftime.
In the second half, Fredonia got on the board first after Jenna Einink intercepted a pass then made a transition layup. Elliot countered for the Bears in the second half with her deep midrange jump shot off the assist from senior guard
Riley Luckie (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) to get the Bears within seven at 31-24. White gave the Blue Devils their largest lead at 11 with her 3-pointer from the right wing at 5:02. With just over 30 seconds remaining in the third, Anna Chiacchia attacked her defender on the left side of the court and finished inside through contact and was rewarded with a free throw that she made. The three-point play put Fredonia up 42-28 heading into the fourth.
Sophomore guard
Mia Jackson (Bronx, N.Y./Mott Hall V) scored the first points for the Bears in the fourth quarter with a floater off the glass. Fredonia quickly responded with an Einink jumper, forcing a timeout. Sydney Turley pushed the lead to 17 with a jumper from the top of the key with just under five minutes left. In the closing minutes, Luckie hit a three and Elliott and freshman guard
Dyamon Hunter (Bronx, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall) each sank two free throws, but with time against them, the Bears weren't able to make up enough ground.
Luckie finished with seven points and Hunter with six.
Katie Pitcher scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Blue Devils. Einink and Turley each scored 10 points in the win.
The Bears are back at home on Friday for a meeting with Oswego State at 5:30 p.m.
