Golden Knights upend Bears

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Clarkson University (5-3) used a big second half to defeat the SUNY Potsdam men 's lacrosse team (2-4) 17-6 on Tuesday evening. Junior captain Josh Huiatt (Lisbon, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) had two goals and an assist to lead the Bears and senior attackman Sean Coe (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) scored twice. Senior captain Zach Sheridan (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) finished with 14 saves.
 
The Golden Knights opened the scoring just 41 seconds into the game as Bryan Penney found the back of the net. Potsdam countered with two goals in 56 seconds to take its lone lead of the contest. Huiatt tied the game at 12:39 and Coe continued his strong play with a marker at 12:33. Senior captain Colby Chapman (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) assisted on Coe's goal. Clarkson then closed the quarter with four in-a-row. Penney evened the score at 8:08. Conor Bartlett, Peter Herrick and Marcus Lavarnway found the net in succession over the next 5:06.
 
The teams traded the only two goals of the second quarter. Junior attackman Tayte Murray (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) got the Bears within 5-3 at 11:06. Lavarnway put Clarkson back up three at 1:59. Sheridan made seven saves in the first half.
 
The Golden Knights broke the game open with six goals in the third quarter. Huiatt assisted on Coe's second goal at 13:35. Clarkson followed with six straight. Penney added two more in the stretch and Herrick and Lavarnway also scored again. Evan Burgett and Billy Bergan netted their first of the game during the run. Huiatt buried his second at 1:13 and Potsdam trailed 12-5 after 45 minutes.
 
The Golden Knights continued their momentum in the final quarter, outscoring Potsdam 5-1. Burgett started a 3-0 run with a man-up goal at 12:57. Conor Bartlett and Herrick followed in succession and Clarkson led 15-5 with 9:34 left. Senior midfielder Josh Bradford (Whitney Point, N.Y./Limestone College) netted the Bears final goal at 7:22, but Lavarnway and Bergan tacked on the last two of the game.
 
Kevin Dyckman earned the victory with 11 saves and all six goals allowed in 57:02. Andre Michaud didn't face a shot in the last 2:58. Potsdam sophomore goalie Mike Nowak (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) allowed a goal and made a save after relieving Sheridan in the final 5:07.
 
The Bears open SUNYAC play when they travel to SUNY Cortland for a 12:30 p.m. contest on Saturday.
