Pioneers pull away from Bears late

UTICA, N.Y.—Utica College (2-1) scored nine second half goals to pull away from the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (0-2) for a 13-8 victory on Saturday afternoon. Junior captain Josh Huiatt (Lisbon, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) led the Bears with four points on two goals and two assists. Senior midfielder Josh Bradford (Whitney Point, N.Y./Limestone College) scored three goals on the day and senior captain Zach Sheridan (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) finished with 12 saves.

Junior attackman Tayte Murray (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) opened the scoring at 12:04 and freshman midfielder Alec Miller (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville North) set up Bradford for an extra-man goal at 9:54. However, the Pioneers rallied for two straight from James Daniele at 8:20, while a man up, and John Avery at 4:12 to tie the score. Sheridan stopped six shots in the first quarter and the teams were tied after 15 minutes.

The Bears offense outshot Utica 15-5 in the second quarter, but it was the Pioneers getting the first two goals. Dale Wagner gave Utica the lead with a goal at 11:23. Daniele netted his second at 4:31 before Potsdam freshman attackman Cam Talcott (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) broke up the 4-0 run at 2:37 with an assist from Huiatt. Potsdam trailed 4-3 at the half.

Tyler Giachinta netted the first goal of the second half at 13:45, but Bradford's second 31 seconds later and a Huiatt marker tied the game with 7:46 left in the third. However, Utica rattled off the next five straight, four in the third quarter, to open up a 9-5 third quarter advantage. Avery, Giachinta, Jared Smaldon and Wagner each scored in a 2:48 span to close out the third.

Craig Disanto buried the Pioneer's fifth in a row to open the final 15 minutes and give Utica its biggest lead of the day to that point at 10-5. Huiatt and Bradford countered with two goals sandwiched around one by Zach Duby and Potsdam trailed 11-7 with 9:09 to play. Huiatt picked up his second assist on Bradford's third goal. With the Bears trying to climb back into the contest, John Hanlon and Smaldon each scored to put the game out of reach at 13-7. Senior captain Gabe Carbone (Accord, N.Y./Rondout Valley) scored the game's final goal on the man advantage at 2:44 with a helper from Miller.

Bears freshman goalie Jack Corcoran (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) made one save and didn't allow a goal in the final 5:10 of the contest in relief of Sheridan. Harrison Bower made 15 saves to earn the win for Utica.

Utica outshot Potsdam 47-39 and was 2-for-7 while a man-up and the Bears went 2-for-8. Potsdam won 12 of the contest's 23 faceoffs with senior captain Colby Chapman (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) winning six and junior faceoff specialist Luke Vitale (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlow) claiming five victories. Huiatt had a team-high six ground balls and Chapman and junior defender Cole Zeller (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) picked up five apiece.

The Bears are now off to Castleton University for a Tuesday matchup with the Spartans at 4 p.m.
