Red Dragons overpower Bears

POTSDAM, N.Y. --- SUNY Oneonta (7-5, 3-1 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (3-9, 1-5 SUNYAC) 20-8 on Wednesday afternoon. Senior midfielder Cayla O'Connor (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) led the Bears with four goals.  

Oneonta got on the board first, going up 2-0 after five minutes of play. The first goal was by sophomore attacker Maggee Sheridan (Warwick/Warwick Valley). Sheridan scored as she came from the right side of the attack area and sent a shot to the middle of the net. Senior attacker Kelsey Cohen (Baldwin/Baldwin) followed it up with a successful free position shot. After four more goals by the Red Dragons, sophomore midfielder Zoe Morgenroth (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) scored the first goal for the Bears. Morgenroth scored after receiving a pass from O' Connor from behind the goalkeeper, and netted her first shot of the afternoon. Oneonta built a 9-1 lead, however Potsdam shaved it down to five late in the half. During the Bears 3-0 run, O'Connor scored with a free position shot to start it, junior attacker Ashley Burrowes (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) scored with a man-up and O'Connor made it 9-4 with a man-up score of her own at the 5:39 mark. The Red Dragons closed the half with a 3-0 run of their own. Cohen struck first to begin the run, then assisted sophomore attacker Sophia Calabrese (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) on a goal. Cohen closed it out and got her fifth goal with another man-up score with 32 seconds left. Oneonta led 12-4 at halftime.  

The Bears opened up the half with a score from O'Conner. The Red Dragons quickly responded with an unassisted goal by Calabrese shortly after faceoff. With 14:34 left, the Red Dragons took their largest lead of the contest at nine after Cohen got another successful man-up goal. With 6:23 left, Morgenroth came right up the middle and netted her second goal of the game, bringing the deficit 19-8. Oneonta didn't allow another goal for the game and sophomore attacker Deirdre Buckley (Merrick/Kellenberg Memorial) added the 20th and final goal for the Red Dragons with 3:38 left.  

Cohen led all scorers with seven goals to go along with three assists, while Calabrese added five goals. 

Morgenroth added two goals for the Bears. Burrows and junior attacker Miranda Kolb (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) ended the game with a goal.  

Bears senior goalie Katie Longamore (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) finished with 13 saves. Senior goalie Jaclyn Marry (Long Beach/Long Beach) had five stops for the Red Dragons.  

The Bears look to get a win Saturday against Fredonia at 12 p. m. at Maxcy Turf Field.
