O’Connor reaches 100 goals in loss to No. 24 Geneseo

POTSDAM, N.Y. –The 24th-ranked SUNY Geneseo Knights (13-4, 9-0 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (5-11, 2-7) 13-7 on Senior Day. Senior midfielder Cayla O'Connor (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) led the Bears with three goals in her last collegiate game. She is the fifth player in program history to reach the 100-goal mark. O'Connor finishes her career at 102 goals and 130 points, good for sole possession of seventh place on the Bears' all-time scoring list.

The Knights got off to a hot 6-0 start, a run capped by freshman midfielder Tessa Doody's (Tully, N.Y./Tully) back-to-back goals at 19:42 and 19:14. Sophomore midfielder Zoe Morgenroth (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) got the Bears on board with a man-up goal at 18:27. O'Connor scored the next two goals at 15:49 and 4:22 to close the gap to 6-3. O'Connor connected on a free-position shot and beating her defender one-on-one. The 3-0 run by Potsdam forced a Geneseo timeout. Geneseo sophomore attack Jacqui Thorsen (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) scored right out of the timeout in the attack zone off the pass from sophomore attack Nicole Voci (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas). Ferrer made it a three-goal game with her free-position goal with 2:06 left. The Knights led 7-4 after the first half.

After both teams struggled to capitalize within the first eight minutes of the second half, senior defender Mallory Max's (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford) man-up goal at the 22:37 mark was the start of a 4-0 run by the Knights. Morgenroth put an end to the run with her turn-around goal with 10:40 left. The Bears got a goal from junior attack Ali Stark (Walworth, N.Y./Gananda) and another from O'Connor within the last seven minutes. However, with time on their side, the Knights held on to secure the 13-7 victory.

Thorsen, sophomore attacker Hannah Marafioti (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and Max each led the Knights with three goals apiece. Doody added two goals. Morgenroth had two goals in the contest for Potsdam.

Senior goalie Katie Longamore (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) put forth a solid effort with 16 saves. Freshman goalie Margaret Rosaschi (Highland Mills, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury) picked up the victory, saving five shots and allowing six goals in the first 55:03. Junior Emmy Lundquist (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) gave up one goal in the last 4:57.

Before the contest, seniors O'Connor, Longamore, midfielder Meaghan Paige (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage) and defenders Mackenzie King (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) and McKaylee Boak (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) were honored for their careers.
