POTSDAM, N.Y.--- SUNY Plattsburgh (8-9, 2-0 SUNYAC) swept the SUNY Potsdam softball team (5-13, 0-4 SUNYAC) with scores of 6-3 and 9-3 on Saturday afternoon. Senior center fielder
Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) had her 100 hit in the game one. Falsion went 4-for-6 on the day and scored three times. Junior pitcher
Megan Fish (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville, N.Y) went 5-for-7 with an RBI.
The Bears got on the board first with an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first, as Falsion came home after a Fish single, and then junior captain
Lucy Condon (Kitchener, Ontario/St. David Catholic) scored after sophomore catcher
Shelby Van Epps (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) doubled to center.
In the fourth inning, the Cardinals got on board after senior center fielder Amy Glashoff's (Montrose, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) RBI single to right, and senior left fielder Jennifer Groat (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) scored. Plattsburgh then tied the game at two a piece off of a base hit in the bottom of the fourth.
The Bears got back in front in the bottom of the sixth inning as Falsion scored her second run after an error by Plattsburgh.
The Cardinals exploded for four runs in the seventh inning for the 6-3 lead. Plattsburgh scored after a hard swing and a couple defensive mistakes by the Bears, freeing senior shortstop Kaitlyn Preiss (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall) and freshman outfielder Gabby Rodriguez (Albany, N.Y./Albany) for back-to-back runs. The Cardinals scored the other runs after Merkel's hit to the top of the fence in the left field.
Potsdam could not get any runners on in their last effort and lost game one 6-3.
Fish went 3-for-3 with an RBI and Falsion went 2-for-3 scoring twice. Van Epps went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
FIsh (2-5) received the loss after pitching a complete game, allowing three earned runs and striking out one.
During the second inning of game two, the Bears were able to get two runs after sophomore shortstop
Grace Folmsbee's (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook) hard swing into the right center, scoring junior second baseman
Sarah Hyland (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) and freshmen designated hitter
Abby Vaughn (Apalachin, N.Y./Owego Free Academy).
In the fourth inning, the Cardinals once again built momentum with three runs, taking a 3-2 lead. Plattsburgh first got on board after Jennifer Groat scored from second after an Haleigh Agans single. Sydney Adolfo then pinch ran and scored after a double to the left, then Bella Spadinger scored the third run of the inning, off the fourth hit for Plattsburgh.
The Cardinals continued their run with two more runs in the fifth inning and four more in the seventh inning, to take a 9-2 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, Falsion scored after freshman left fielder
Vanessa Brandt's (Saugerties, N.Y./Saugerties) single to right center. However, the Bears could not get any closer and the Cardinals took the 9-3 victory.
Brandt went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Folmsbee went 1-for-3 with two RBI.Â
For Plattsburgh, Groat (1-1) got the victory after pitching a complete game, allowing three runs and striking out one.
Senior pitcher
Alissa McCauley (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) (2-4) got the loss after pitching four innings, allowing four runs and striking out two. Sophomore
Kiera Nesbitt (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) pitched an inning allowing one unearned run. Fish pitched the final two innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out three.
The Bears are back in action on Tuesday April 9 for a double header at Clarkson beginning at 3 p.m.
