Bruschini leads offensive explosion in 7-0 victory over Paul Smith’s

POTSDAM, N.Y.--- The SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (2-0) overpowered the Paul Smith's College Bobcats (1-1) 7-0 on Saturday afternoon. A late first half surge gave the Bears a comfortable lead and their defense helped them secure the victory. Six different players scored for Potsdam. Senior forward Teddy Bruschini (Wilton, N.Y./South Glens Falls) (2g, 1a), senior forward Alejandro Callejas (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) (1g), senior forward Brandon Igiehon (Dublin, Ireland/Channel View School) (1g), freshman defender Donny Ophals (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) (1g, 1a), freshman midfielder Justin Lamando (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) (1g), and junior defender Ryan Potter (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) (1g).

Defense was the story for the start of the contest, as Bobcats junior goalkeeper Nick Fraiser (Johnstown, N.Y./Johnstown) came away with many key saves. He stopped four Potsdam attempts within the first 20 minutes of play. The Bears began to pick up steam in the later stages of the first period. Callejas finally struck first when he found the side of the net on a penalty kick at 22:43. With 13 minutes left, Lamando gained control of the ball at the goal line off a pass from freshman forward Andrew Spagnuolo (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) and fired it past Fraiser for his first collegiate goal. Bruschini continued the momentum with a sidestep and scored in the 39th minute with an assist from sophomore midfielder Sebastian Matos (Huntington, N.Y./Half Hallow Hills). Just 1:20 later, Bruschini followed it up with an assist to Potter, when he delivered the ball from left field. Potter then to buried his shot in the corner. To close the half, Bruschini broke free from his defender at the goal line after a feed from Ophals and fired another shot past Fraiser, putting Potsdam up 5-0 with 2:51 left in the half.

The Bears picked up where they left off in the new period. Ophals broke free for his first career goal to extend the lead at 52:09. Fraiser got a piece of the ball, but ultimately wasn't able to prevent the goal. Igiehon closed the scoring with his first collegiate goal on another helper from Spagnuolo at the 27:50 mark and the Bears came away with the win.

Sophomore goalkeeper Conor Callan (Piermont, N.Y./Tappan Zee) picked up his second win despite not facing a shot on goal. Senior Esdras Juarez (Tuckahoe, N.Y./Tuckahoe) claimed half of the shutout with two stops in the second half. Fraiser finished with seven saves for the Bobcats.

The Bears outshot the Bobcats 29-5, with a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Next, Potsdam heads to SUNY Canton for a 7 p.m. meeting with the Kangaroos on Wednesday.
