Dean scores twice, but SLU overcomes Bears, 3-2

POTSDAM, N.Y. –Junior forward Lexi Dean (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) scored twice to erase a 2-0 deficit, but St. Lawrence University (5-1) countered to take a 3-2 victory from the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (4-4).  A goal from junior forward Julia Mulhern (Beaconsfield, Quebec/Hotchkiss) in the second half secured the win for the Saints. Junior defender Maeve Morrissey (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) assisted on both of Dean's goals and senior goalie Delphine Léonard (Anjou, Quebec/Dawson College Prep) finished with eight saves.

The Saints gained control early in the game as sophomore midfielder Isabel Silvia (Wellesley, Mass./The Rivers School) sent a lob from the middle of the field to make it 1-0. The Bears, looking to get out of their early deficit, frequently tested Saints senior goalkeeper Samanatha Allen (Ringwood, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy). At 36:52, freshman midfielder Meaghan Sardi (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) challenged Allen after creating separation from her defender, but her shot just missed the left post. Silvia recorded her second goal soon after. As senior midfielder Emily Wade (Rochester, N.Y./Mercy) sent the ball from the right sideline to the goal area, Silvia gained possession and deposited her shot into the net at 13:16. Dean cut the deficit to one, after she received a pass from Morrissey, and sent a long shot that went off the post and in at 29:32. 10 minutes later, Dean completely erased the deficit. Morrissey, who once again assisted Dean, took off in a burst of speed and sent the ball to the forward, who scored from the penalty area.

With both teams looking to take the lead, they traded scoring chances to begin the second half. The Saints challenged Leonard early. In the middle of the period, Allen came up with a big save as she dived for the ball on Sardi's attempt from the corner. Mulhern then put the Saints back on top with her goal at the 22:57 mark. After a foot race down the sideline with a Bears defender, Mulhern spiked the ball over the head of Léonard. With 1:20 left, the Bears had one last opportunity to send the game to overtime with a corner kick, but junior goalie Cynnie White (Northport, Mich./Westminster Academy) made the save in relief of Allen to seal the win for the Saints.

Potsdam had a 21-19 advantage in shots, and a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.

Allen had eight saves for the Saints, but White stopped six shots in the second half to earn the win.

Dean's two goals in the first half moved her into a tie for seventh place on the all-time scoring list with Heather Johnson '13 at 56 points.

The Bears return to action on September 27, as they travel to Buffalo State to meet the Bengals at 4 p.m.
