POTSDAM, N.Y.—St. Lawrence University (3-3) scored in each half to defeat the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (2-6-1) 2-0 on Saturday afternoon. Bears sophomore goalkeeper
Conor Callan (Piermont, N.Y./Tappan Zee) made five saves.
Bears senior captain
Wilber Parada (Huntington Station, N.Y./Huntington) had the first scoring chance of the afternoon, but his shot sailed wide left just 5:29 into the contest. The Saints picked up their pressure after the shot and smothered Potsdam's offense for much of the rest of the contest. At the 21:33 mark, sophomore midfielder Raphael Zoccolaro (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/The Kiski School) played a ball ahead to freshman midfielder Michael McDougald (Cohasset, Mass.). McDougald then rang the right post to make it 1-0. The Saints created several more strong opportunities in the half, but were unable to add to the lead.
The shots evened out in the second half, with the Saints claiming a 7-6 edge. However, Callan and his defenders kept it a one-goal game until late. The Bears pressed late and senior forward
Alejandro Callejas (Bayshore, N.Y./Brentwood) attempted to tie the game with 88:30 to go, but SLU freshman goalie Ben Woelfinger (Hessen, Germany/Gymnasium Oberursel) snatched the ball out of the air. With Potsdam throwing everything into it's attack in the final seconds, the Saints were able to slip past the defense for the final tally. At 18:46, freshman midfielder Miles Levy (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane) scored on a pass from sophomore forward Andrew Lenfant (Yorktown, Va./Tabb). Senior back Aidan Callahan (Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home) claimed the second assist.
Woelfinger made two saves for the shutout.
The Bears open up SUNYAC play next Friday when they host Buffalo State at 4 p.m.
