Mackenzie Bowie (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville) scored goals number three and four of the weekend as the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (3-2) rolled to another 5-1 victory over New England College (1-3) in the NEC Tourney finale. Junior forward
Lexi Dean (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) played a part in four goals with a marker and three assists for five points. Sophomore midfielder
Kristina Sanchez (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) and freshman midfielder
Nora Canning (Saranac, N.Y./Saranac) also scored for the Bears. Junior goalkeeper
Gabby Hobika (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford) made three saves for her 12th career win.
Potsdam outshot the Pilgrims 12-5 in the first half and it showed. Dean buried her 19th career goal just two 2:47 into the contest with an assist from Canning. NEC cut the lead in half at the 21-minute mark on a goal from Mackenzie Fels, however the Pilgrims couldn't build any momentum. Bowie buried a feed from Dean at 34:21 and 38:45 for a commanding 4-1 lead at the break. Canning closed the scoring in the 65th minute on another helper from Dean.
With the win in hand, Hobika gave way to freshman
Chloe Gordon (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) who made one save in the last 13:13. Pilgrim goalie Emily Sashko allowed all five goals and made four saves in the first 70:01. Allie Stoddart played the final 19:59 and stopped one shot.
The Bears outshot NEC 20-13 on the day and had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Potsdam is now 6-0 against the Pilgrims in the all-time series. Dean now has 52 career points (19g, 14a) and has moved up to eighth place on the Bears' scoring list.
The Bears are back in action on Tuesday night when they head to SUNY Canton for the annual Boyd Jones Cup at 7 p.m.
