Late surge lifts Bears

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (4-14-1, 3-7-1 SUNYAC) finished up their road trip Saturday afternoon, battling their way back from an early 2-0 hole to defeat The College at Brockport (12-7, 6-5 SUNYAC) 4-2. Senior forwards Bryce Ferrell (Buffalo, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and Tyler Young (Massena, N.Y./Kanata Lasers) each recorded a goal and an assist for the Bears. Sophomore forward Tom Terranova (Middletown, N.J./Syracuse Stars) and junior defenseman Joseph Richardson (Palm Beach, Fla./PAL Islanders) also scored.

Brockport jumped on the Bears early and were able to take the lead just 4:49 into the first period. Following a faceoff win by Ethan Solat, Doc Gentzler fed the puck to the point where Corey Tam ripped a one-timer past Bears sophomore goalie Michael Paglucca (North Reading, Mass./New Hampshire Avalanche). After killing off a penalty later in the period, the Bears looked for the equalizer. However, while trying to break the puck out, the Bears commited a costly turnover that ended up in the high slot where Jeremy Solat made no mistake firing it past Paglucca for the 2-0 lead. Hoping to put a dent in the Brockport lead before the intermission, Potsdam headed to the powerplay with just under two minutes remaining. It took just 23 seconds for the Bears to strike as Terranova hammered a point shot past the Brockport goalie. Freshman defenseman Ryan Lieth (Warwick, N.Y./New York Apple Core) and Young assisted on the goal. The Bears would head to the locker room down one.

The second period would feature no goals for either team. The Bears would have two powerplay opportunities in the middle stanza but would come up empty on both. The Eagles had the man advantage only once in the period and would also walk away empty handed.

Headed into the third, the Bears were in need of a goal to even the score. The Bears battled the entire period, holding the Eagles off the score sheet for yet another twenty minutes, but couldn't seem to find the net. With just under three minutes remaining in the period, the flood gates finally opened for the Bears and the goal parade began. The first of Potsdam's three goals in the final three minutes of play came from Richardson as he shot the puck through traffic from the point for the game-tying goal. Sophomore forward Michael McArthur (St. Thomas, Ontario/Oswego State) and senior forward Joey Sollazzo (Ottawa, Ontario/Navan Grads) assisted on the goal. Just 20 seconds later, the Bears would take the lead as Ferrell scored off of a Brockport turnover at center ice. Ferrell attacked the zone on a 2-on-1 rush, bouncing the puck off of the sliding Brockport defenseman for the goal. Finding themselves suddenly down a goal, Brockport would pull their goaltender for the extra attacker, but it was too little too late as Young would bury an empty netter for the 4-2 victory. Ferrell would assist on the final goal.

Paglucca finished with 15 saves, Matt Schneider finished with 25 saves for the Eagles.

The Bears are back on home ice next weekend as they play host to SUNY Cortland on Friday at 7 pm.
