POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Cortland (14-1, 8-0 SUNYAC) used long-range shooting to pull away from the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (6-9, 3-6) for a 67-46 victory on Saturday afternoon. Sophomores
Dyamon Hunter (Bronx, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) and
Devyn Elliott (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) each scored 12 points to lead the Bears and Elliott also grabbed 11 rebounds for her 14th career double-double.
The teams stayed within a possession of one another until the 4:03 mark. With Cortland up 8-6, Potsdam was called for a questionable charge. The Red Dragons got the ball back and finished the quarter on a 15-3 run, including threes from freshman Nyia Longford (Medford, N.Y./Longwood) and junior forward Meghan Flanagan (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton). Cortland led 23-9 after 10 minutes.
Trailing 25-11 23 seconds into the second quarter, Potsdam rallied with a 15-5 run. Freshman forward
Jakia Howard (Syracuse, N.Y./Nottingham) scored on a layup to open the stretch. Hunter scored six points and Elliott hit a jumper with 1:13 left in the half to make it a 30-26 contest. Hunter scored on another layup with 43 second remaining, but Cortland freshman guard Casey Travers (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor) hit a three late and the Red Dragons led 36-28 at the break.
Howard and Elliott scored back-to-back to get the Bears within 38-32 1:24 into the third quarter, but Cortland proved too strong the rest of the way. Longford hit another three at 1:13 to give the Red Dragons a 50-35 lead. Sophomore guard
Katelyn Flanagan (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) sank a 3-pointer in the final minute, but Potsdam trailed by 12.
Cortland extended its lead in the fourth, outscoring the Bears by nine. Elliott added four points to her total and freshman guard
Bella Barner (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) hit a three in Potsdam's final flourish.
Freshman forward
Caroline LaFountain (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) scored seven points and Howard contributed six and 13 rebounds.
Longford and senior guard Beth Bonin (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) each scored 18 points for Cortland and Longford added nine rebounds. Travers had eight points and six rebounds.
The Bears are back in action next Friday when they travel to the College at Brockport to take on the Golden Eagles at 5:30 p.m.
