GENESEO, N.Y.—SUNY Geneseo (15-3, 8-3 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (6-11, 3-8) 89-50 on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore guard
Dyamon Hunter (Bronx, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) led the Bears with 15 points, while sophomore forward
Devyn Elliott (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) and freshman guard
Caroline LaFountain (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) added 13 and 10, respectively.
Potsdam stayed out in front of the Knights for much of the first quarter. LaFountain hit a three at 7:40 to give the Bears a 7-4 lead. Sophomore forward
Alexis Davis (Brooklyn, N.Y./Williamsburg H.S. of Architecture & Design) sank a three at 2:39 and freshman guard
Tsai Lewis (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) hit jumper a minute later and Potsdam led 15-9. Geneseo scored the final four points of the first 10 minutes, but the Bears held the 15-13 advantage.
After falling behind by five twice in the second quarter, Potsdam hung in with the Knights. LaFountain hit another three at 4:35 to get the Bears within 26-24. However, Geneseo then pulled away for good, closing the half on a 16-2 run. The Knights took a 42-26 lead into the locker room.
Geneseo stayed hot in the third quarter, opening the final half on a 19-4 run to grab a 61-33 advantage at the 5:55 mark. The Knights slowly increased their lead as the quarter ticked away. Elliott scored six during the quarter and Hunter added five, but Potsdam trailed 75-40 after 30 minutes.
The both offenses slowed down in the fourth, but the Knights extended their lead and closed out the 89-50 win. Hunter added six more to her total in the last 10 minutes.
Kerrin Montgomery led Geneseo with 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Lindsay Halpin scored 14 and Madison McCulley finished with 11. Sara Ciotti and Natalie Alfieri each chipped in 10.
The Bears are back home on Friday when they host Buffalo State at 5:30 p.m. as part of Bear Pride Night.
